We have always rinsed/wetted the calves before shampooing, then of course rinsed the soap out.  This is also the way I see most people do it.  Today I got a soap foamer so my wife wouldn't have to hold the soap bottle why spraying water through it on to the calf.  The directions with the foamer says to not wet the calf first because the wet hair forms a barrier preventing the soap from getting down to the hide to clean.  What are your opinions?

We use a foamer, and we do wet the calves.  I think the most important thing is getting your calves clean. Do it one way, then the other.  I don't think it'll make all that much of a difference.

We got a foamer this spring.  I can't believe the amount of soap we have saved because of it.

I believe that a lot of how you use it depends upon the type of hair a calf has.

We had a steer that had nice, but fine hair.  It didn't matter if we foamed him wet or dry.

We have a steer that has really thick long hair.  We have to foam him dry or the soap never reaches his hide.  If we foam him dry, you can actually watch the foam change colors and see the dirt coming off his skin.

Either way, blow them out really good before you wash.  It helps a lot.
