It seems Hoff Limited Edition has nearly become the sire of the moment with many "popular" bulls by him or in their pedigree over there. What are your thoughts on why this is and also what do you know of a bull Rawburn Edge. I realize he may be in opposition to your clients but an unbiased opinion would be appreciated.

I think the reason Hoff Limited Edition has become popular is two fold. 1). He produces quality cattle, with shape and power required by the markets over here and 2). Cattle in turn sired by him carry good performance figures which makes them easy to sell. Limited Edition was a fantastic looking bull. Probably the best Angus sire I have personally seen. He was big, but so well balanced. When I saw him he strode out like a cat. He really was impressive. With regard to the Rawburn Edge bull, people who use him will definitely have big cattle with huge performance figures but at a price. He himself is sired by the Rawburn Lord Histar bull. Histar himself displayed a lot of front. In my opinion he had way too much brisket. He was just a big bull. His paternal grand-sire was Rawburn Transformer who it is widely known had problems with his hind legs.On a positive,  Edge himself has a milk figure of plus 10 or eleven on the UK system. I think he should breed this through as he is from the Cudlobe Ellen Erica cow family. I personally don't like Edge. I think like his sire he's just a big bull. He doesn't really seem to exhibit any breed character either. There is so much choice and competition out there in the pursuit of figures I'm sure lots of UK breeders will sample him, especially as Cogent have the distribution network to get him out there.

Thanks. I have just used 15 straws of Edge which may by the sound of it been a mistake  :-\. Putting over some moderate strucually sound cows so will see how it goes. He has just been released over here. Our type of cattle our more like yours and the Canadian type.

I think Edge won't do you any harm at all if you use him on moderate framed cows. He's a bull that's all about one thing, and that's figures. The Rawburn herd are very focused on breeding cattle with figures, and sometimes I feel other things get lost along the way. Their bull Rommel is the current bull of the moment over here. I personally don't like him, but on the other side of the coin I do like his full brother Rock Solid. Rock Solid isn't a perfect bull by any stretch, but what he does he does very well. The champion Angus heifer at the Royal Welsh Show was by him and she was pretty as a picture. Very correct, and feminine but with that little bit of added oomph. I have added a pic of her.

This is the bull you bred?

Yep. Hope you like. Here's the only photo I have of him the day he won at The RHS.
