I was told today that a new Executive Secretary has been hired and that it was going to be announced in Louisville next week. It seems like someone has "spilled the beans" as I heard this same rumour from two sources today. Of course, it is just rumour at this point in time, as an announcement from the ASA board has not been released yet.

The rumour is that Dr Bert Moore will be the new Executive Secretary. If this is indeed true, I cannot think of anyone who is more qualified to bridge the large gap between the show oriented and the commercially oriented breeders. Bert Moore has had a very distinguished career at North Dakota State. He has been the coach of the NDSU judging team for many years, and he has been in charge of the purebred herds there for some time as well. Bert has been a exceptional teacher of young people and he is one of the best liked educators I can think of. I cannot think of anyone who has a deeper love of Shorthorn cattle and he has always maintained the attitude that these cattle had to be of some earthy good after their show careers are over.  Bert Moore is one of the nicest person in the beef business. He is respected and extremely intelligent. He can recite Shorthorn pedigrees back to the 1800s. He is also not barn blind, and he appreciates a good beast no matter what color he/she is.

I have always considered Bert Moore to be a true gentleman. I hope this rumour is correct..... and I also hope his skin is thick enough for this major task.

Bert would be fine with me.  His folks were long time breeders here in Iowa and served as state association secretary/treasurer for many years.  A very nice family.  I always enjoyed showing under Bert, you knew you would always get a fair shake.  I especially appreciated how he "saw" the cattle, even if you didn't agree with his placings.  I've seen some judges that would place five heifers and give a set of reasons, then if you brought the same heifers back in later, they would place them just the opposite and use the same set of reasons.  Bert was not like that.  I always found Bert to be a truly genuine person that is quite well respected in the cattle business.  Some of the other names that have been floated about would be okay as well.  We'll just wait and see.

Cool...someone please report back results of the event. I would like to know shorthorn directors also. Todd Harmon is a candidate(from kansas).I don't see eye to eye with him on every thing but he is a man of integrity. Also report on winners, frame scores, thefts, rapes(just kidding) and other info. ;D

If the rumor is true (and I guess they'll find out tomorrow) I agree with JiT, Bert would be an exceptional choice.  I first got to know him when I coached a college judging team and have found him to always be a man of the highest integrity.  And JiT you're right - your skin better be pretty thick for this job.  BUT the opportunity is there for the right person to move the breed forward (and quickly) if the breeders will let him do his job.  My best wishes to whoever gets the job.

What was the general buzz around the barns about Bert being named Executive Secretary?

A lot of the newer breeders didn't know the name & the 1st the question they would ask is does he have a Shortie background? Once you told them that he did then they were ok with it. Of the people that did know him or of him then everybody seemed to be ok with it & thought he was worth a shot.
