I wish I could have made it down to the Schrag sale as it looked like a very good offering by all the contributors. I would have liked to especially see the lots 25-28 as they are all out of Bollums Elsie's Jade female as she was bred here and resulted from a set of embryos the Bollum's purchased from us.

JIT, I was super impressed with the 25-28 hfrs(which is why I bought 3 of them). Anytime you can have a female that produces 4 females by 4 different bulls that are that good , then there is something there I think. There was some really good cattle there.

Here is a picture of our Elsie Jade female as a 3 year old. That was 10 years ago and she is now approaching 13 years of age and still going strong. A HC Timeline 17T  son of Elsies Jade was Reserve Grand at the recent Canadian Western Agribition show. He ran on grass most of the summer and weighed in at 1904 lb at the show at 21 months of age. If Bollum's True Blue daughter is half as good as she looks in her picture, they have a real great one! I really need to get down there to see her!

While I haven't been to see Schrag's herd for a few years now, I expect there may be an occasional big cow, but I think most would be pretty moderate sized. AJ, seeing that you don't live that far from where Schrag's are located, why don't you make a little field trip and see their herd for yourself. Who knows.... you might be pleasantly surprised!

What did the two what's up bulls bring, and who bought them?

19- 10,000 to Inskeep
20- I bought for 3600 for Tim Brandenburg.

So that bull will be living in IL--  I will be down to Moultrie county to see in person.

Your take on the two bulls?  The expensive one lacked 'flash' in his picture- and the other seemed interesting to me from the rear profile.

This is just my personal opinion. I thought he cut up in the flank a little, maybe a just little straight on the back wheels. The biggest issue I had was on his right front foot . When he walked, his pastern would bow out sideways it seemed . If you watch the video, you will see about 2 or 3 times he will stumble on that foot. He did have some meat in him.
The 20 bull was pretty nice and I thought a pretty good buy at $3600. Tim was pretty pleased with him when he arrived yesterday afternoon.

the shallow look I believe is getting typical of the what's up calves.  we only got one from the first 5 straws-- and he's as thick as you can make one, stout, just not deep enough.  have another one due any day, couple more straws in the tank.

Thanks to everone for a great sale! We are very excitied about our Whats Up calves and are quite proud of the Man Up bull. We love his mucle and extra rib shape. The Whats Up calves averaged $8757 and he will see much more use here in Marion!
Thanks again, Schrags

What happened to the promotion of the bull then?  He was being promoted really hard for quite some time, and about the time the first calves were being born, his promotion fell to almost nothing.  I haven't seen many calves from him, and had begun to think that our calf born last spring was the oldest, and one of the only ones born outside the owner's herd.

The What's Up calves in general I really liked. I bought 2 for people giving a little over $12,000 for one. I thought that 14b was an awesome female and I went to $15k on her. The calves had some really good bone to them and some muscle to them with plenty of top. I thought the 20 bull moved really well .

Doc.....after your evaluation of their cattle....as a consultant.....what would you do to improve Schrags breeding program? Thanks in advance.

Not to continue to beat upon a dead horse, but the very traits you described, and the owner described, are the exact things that our calf excells at-- yet our biggest complaint of him, also ranks as your's of the more expensive bull.

My question is, should I continue breeding with this bull, or will he be knocked off, and forgotten about as just another shorthorn bull who does one or two things really good, and the rest is so lacking it's not worth using him over.?

AJ, you have me mistaken for someone else. The only cattle I evaluated were the cattle in the sale at Schrags. I did that as a breeder that was glad to finally to be able to go to their place. I wasn't a consultant. I gave my personal opinion to some friends of mine and they asked me to bid for them. As far as the rest of Schrags herd goes, I didn't have the pleasure of going thru it. I did see a couple of the donor cows that they sold flushes in and they were good. As far as what I would do to improve their breeding program, I geuss I would just keep raising Nat'l Champions, high sellers and breed dominating females such as the Augusta Prides and the Revival cow families like they do now.
Like JIT said, why don't you get outside your bubble and take a trip up there yourself and see what you would suggest.
