Tie it to the infertility problems in man, and keep the though that the people who view it are certain we use hormones at the drop of the hat x100. Use the thought we are using bulls we could never afford to increase the food supply.

Like cow,an says focus on the fact it works to improve the herd through use of superior genetics....  Maybe not focus on what it does for show cattle, but  feed efficiency calving ease in beef cows, and increased production in dairy...making more with less.....  Also that it allows people to efficiently have smaller herds on acreages etc.    point out that while many use good old fashion heat detection with no hormones that hormones can be used and explain how it works, it is a science project after all.....  These practices again are used to improve efficiency,  Would not have a tech come to ai one cow if they lived very far.....  Illustrate the anatomy with a visual aid....    Could go so far and have some volunteers try to put a hot dog on a ai instrument, or even a kabob stick.  While blind folded with a couple towels around the hotdog to demonstrate how much skill is involved......

Since she is in 7th grade keep it simple. The judges may or may not understand anything to do with ag let alone cows. Also at some point her peers will have to look at it and they need to be able to understand. Have pictures of the repro tract and how the cervix isnt just a strait shot in. Explain why you ai either you dont want to have a bull around or get saught after genetics. Talk percentages for conception. I like the idea of blindfolding and using bbq sticks to try to get thru a hot dog. That will attract other kids since it will be hands on. I wouldnt go into synchronization methods this year this is definently something you could build on every year. Synchronization might be over the heads of most. You want to teach them something without going over their head where they dont understand. Also coming from a teacher tell her there will be giggles when she says heat cycle or breeding. Lol its just the age especially with the boys lol Good luck

Thank you for your help.  We plan on keeping it simple.  Most of the kids in her class have no idea, let alone the judges.  I can only imagine.  We live in a rural communiting also...

My child did a similar project.  Went through the process and equipment used.  Kept it pretty simple.  Took some sire catalogs and other AI equipment.  Showed cow and offspring, so the kids who were maybe not as familiar could put two and two together.  Focused mainly on having much greater genetic opportunity when AI'ing as opposed to just using the same bull year after year.  How AI'ing could improve the herd etc.  My kiddo is an 8th grader, so what was done seemed pretty age appropriate.
