We actually give a pill to the calves at birth. I can't remember what it is called, but we haven't had scours in 6 years knock on wood.

Two popular "boluses" that folks give at birth are "Calf Guard" and "First Defense". Each covers different "bugs"... very effective and will stop a outbreak dead. Roughly $10-12 per calf. Each must be given ASAP after birth (within a few hours best).
