Anyone have experience using selenium to help improve soundness, specifically popping pasterns? I'm just wondering how much, how many times and how soon before a show you'd give it. Or is there any other product that you'd recommend? Thanks in advance!

Interesting that the cattle people use and promote Se to help loosen up popping pasterns and give them some flex...

whereas the sheep people use it to tighten up pasterns and make them stronger.

I guess it works both ways, it's a miracle hormone.

I would recommend going online and buying Rep Gel Plus and giving it to you steer once a week from now until show.  It would also be a good idea to go to TSC and buy a bucket of joint supplemnet made by Dumar.  Its an apple flavored pellet that you top dress.  Lastley, make sure he gets plenty of exercise.  G-Luck

A couple years ago we gave a calf a small dose of Selenium and she had an allergic reaction and was dead within about three minutes.  Probably not the Seleniums fault but just a bad reaction.

SE is not a hormone...it's a mineral. Just FYI...

Selenium is one of the key components in Antipop, a revolutionary product that has just been released to the open public.  It is offered through Champion Show Stock.  It blends herbs used in the horse for those issues, with vitamins & minerals, and the key ingredient-Selenium.  Based on research, Selenium needs to be running at a high level in the system to get the effects.  This product is used over the last 48 hrs to make sure rates are running high for full effect.  Great product.

Selenium  is a part of a soundness program.  Copper, zinc, iron, and selenium are usually intertwined,  a lack of 1 will cause any of the others to be unavailable.  Straight selenium ain't gonna help a bit if the others are out of wack.  The vigrotone people have done a good job I. Figuring out what works,  all that claim they can feed 1 without the others may get away with it but o e day it will bite them in The a**.

Nope still not a hormone!  A hormone is something that would be produced by some gland in the body.  Selenium is a naturally occuring mineral, which  is very important to muscle and joint development and health.  Regardless of what the joint problem is, selenium can be an important part of fixing it.  The most common major selenium deficient disease is White Muscles Disease in sheep.  We use Selenium a lot in the area I am from because our soil and thus our grasses are naturally deficient in selenium.

you clearly missed my point.  obviously I know that Se is a naturally occurring object found in the soil-- meaning mineral.  obviously, i also know that it is deficient in a good majority of the US- and it gets used in large amounts around here.
