we are having a hard time finding one this year we like (love) in our budget.  I agree I don't want to have be talked into buying a calf, when we walk up at least one of us must gravitate towards that calf for us to get it.  I have had people sending me pictures saying I have a good one for a county fair but when when we see pictures they are nothing that can compete in our area

Thats the thing to a calf that will win my county fair might not even be competitive else where. I know that after walking thru the stalls for my county I grew up showing in last year I was very disapointed. There was no steers that were weighing above 1200 and most were hardly clipped. I can remember when I showed 15 years go or so it was a tough county fair that many times the champions were competitive at state and national shows.

Personally I have to love a calf when I see it or I don't buy it.

I feel like I have to just love the steer upon immediate sight. Not even love just know that I can do something with this calf. The steer that we  ought earlier this year was super green and it was a split second decision but I knew that he was a good buy. I also notice that when I'm working with the calf everyday that I start picking out little flaws so it helps me work them out or on show day fitting the calf a certain way to achieve my goals in the ring. So there is some gap on what I want and what ican work with but when you compete against calves that should be in a cooler waiting on state fair I'm going to be picky I know it's not my year to take grand but I want to walk away with a banner and enjoy my calf while doing it

What was your budget "basically"?

I am guessing you were looking for a $2500 steer.

I really thought people in this industry were more honest because most of them are country people with a good work ethic and were raised right.

At least you've learned early on how unreliable the indicators you mention really are at assessing the content of one's character.

Don't really think they were trying to deceive you, they probably thought since the calf was out of a cluby bull, and looked better than their other calves, he was a show calf.
Some of the hobby breeders handle their "show" calves just like they would a commercial calf, no creep, just mama and grass, those calves will not look like the little butterballs that have been on creep as soon as they would eat it.

I have seen steers I would not look at twice while the people standing next to me were absolutely in love with it. I have also picked up a green steer that was passed up on several times that turned out to do very well. I think picking through green calves is the hardest but you can really find a diamond in the rough sometimes.

How many times have we heard about the steer none of the traders would take, it's sold for 2 grand and goes on and when big and often.

I had the opportunity to go look at calves with someone who I think can really evaluate a steer, was quite the learning experience for me. I can pick a good one, he took it to the next level as far as sifting through the good ones to get the best one out of a group of quality calves. When we got to the green calves, that is really where I learned a lot. It is the little things that matter the most.

Hopefully you find what your looking for.

Just out of curiosity what is way over market price, since market is around 1500 right now.

I bought a steer Sunday and my budget was about 2000 due to the fact my first steer died
The guy cut us a hell of a deal due to my story and the competition in my county, super nice guy when some nice calves his heifers were a lot better then his steers in my eyes

I will take some pics and post them tomorrow he is a tank
I am planning on taking him to Kentucky beef expo and Purdue agr show

Nice calf.  I am glad you found one.

The BIG surprises seem to usually be in that $2,000 to $3,000 range.  When they are worth almost $2,000 at the sale barn, perceptions get to changing in a hurry.

Congratulations and good luck!
