Who does this? certain collection facilities, one provider?

What does the cost look like?

Does the semen have to be fresh, or can it be frozen?

Have an OLD broad that I'm thinking of flushing to get more dtrs around the place..  don't know what I want to breed her to. Have some stuff in tank that could work, but would like to ensure that female progeny would arise from this mating.  Don't know if I want to breed her to anythiing on the hoof around here either...

thoughts?

Trans Ova sexes semen that has already been collected and uses it in vitro embryo transfer.  More expensive than traditional ET but if you are producing high value calves it can be worthwhile.

Semen has to be fresh to be sexed due to the rapid nature of flow cytometry used to sex the semen and the shear numbers of actual sprem cells are not enough in one .5cc straw of semen to get adequate numbers for fertilization.  As I am sure you know semen can not be thawed and refrozen.

I always assumed that semen could not be thawed and refrozen.. but if  you were doing the sorting..and then stuck in right into the animal for ET work (all at the facility), then I thought maybe it could be done.

I learned something new today (pop)

The people that own the patent to the semen sorting technology is Sexing Technologies. They have a lab in Texas and Wisconsin and I think another new one in Nebraska. Trans Ova does not own the technology, but uses a Sexing Technolgies machine to sort the semen as does Genex, ABS, Select Sires, etc.

I had that question a while back. I wanted to thaw and sort a few older conventional straws and then immediately use it to Flush. Unfortunately you need a lot of cells to Flush with and after a conventional straw is thawed and then sorted, there is not enough left to use in a Flush.

All sexed semen is packed in a .25cc straw. There are straws with 2.1 million cells used for AI and straws with 5.0 million cells used for flushing. However, as of now the only way to get a 5 million dose straw for flushing is from someone who had their bull custom processed through  Sexing Technogies or Trans OVa.

Does anyone know the cost of getting sexed semen collected vs. conventional semen on a per straw basis?

It depends on where you get it processed. I know Trans Ova does it at their Iowa facility, however I have never had it done there. I have done it through Sexing Technologies. We had our bull collected and the ejaculate was shipped to them fedex overnight to their Nebraska facility. Our AI straws were at $35 and some of our Flush straws were at $70. We also had some "secondary" gender AI straws made that were at $15.
