If your fair is in the end of July, I'd start May 1.  We used a bucket of it last year for our 1 fair steer, he was under 2 fans all day, rinsed 3-4x a day and this steer had beautiful hair!  I almost cried when they were clipping it off...lol
We started 90 days prior to our fair, and we just ran out a few days before fair.  Good Luck!

I started about 5 months before our fair.  Bad bad bad idea.  Our steer had phenomenal hair, but started losing it earlier than he should've.  Resist the temptation to start too early, it just simply doesn't work out.  Shag worked extremely well on our calf, but next time I'll be more careful when I start it.  I will say this: when I started our steer on shag last fall, it was like flipping a switch.  He looked like each hair was growing hair.  It was nuts.  The shag works, for sure.

I'd have to go out and look on the container, but using the scoop that came with it, I think it's 1 scoop per day?  We mixed it in with the feed at the last feeding of the day.  Then we started noticing the dog eating it .  If you are feeding it to 5-6 steers, you'll need quite a few buckets.  I know it works, but like I said before, we were rinsing 3-4 x a day, so I know that helped alot also.

what he is saying is that he fed it too early and the hair went through it's natural growing stage and then the calf shucked it off probably because it had too much hair.

basically it worked too well. thats why you only feed it for 90 days, so that it is still able to grow and it is not losing hair when you are showing.

How exactly do you feed it for 90 days without wasting any? On sullivans it says the pail is for 60 days and the bag is for 120. . .

The pails seal up nicely and keep well. Never tried to keep any to the next year, but it's sure alright for a few months - we've used partial buckets from spring shows (quit using mid March) for fall ones (start feeding early July for early October shows) and it seems to be good as new.

LOL...I don't think the dog got enough of it to make a difference in it's hair thank God.  We just started standing there while the steer was eating it to make sure the dog didn't get too much.

can you like feed it for a while and then quit ..... we have a lil baby thats gonna show in class one or two at fortworth but even if he does good we arent gonna sell because he is going to a slick show in june and after f.w we are done with hair . . would he have any other set backs besides losing his hair between f.w and and june if we cut him off the shag? it may be stupid but he wasnt cheap and dont want to do something dumb with him
