Short cycling a heifer

I have a yearling heifer that we are trying to AI.  She came in a very strong heat on Monday this week (June 29th).  I decided not to AI her at that time since I was a little late on the heat detection and she is headed in for a show this week.  With the hot weather, trailer rides, extra stress of the show I thought she wouldn't likely catch anyway.  After next Monday she is done showing for the summer so will be put in a small pasture on grass and scaled back on the grain.  Seems like a much better time to AI her.

I would like to breed her sooner than her next cycle (approximately July 20th).  I have heard of short cycling cattle, but I am not familiar with the process.  Can you please provide the details of the shots, products to use, and pros/ cons?  I will certainly speak with my vet about this, but I wanted to get some SP advice too.  Thanks.

best to go at least 7 days after heat or when using lut to synch at day 0 you can rehit non-responders on day 10.  You are looking for a CL for lutalyse to work and it will take 7 days after heat.  expect a heat 48-72 hours after you shoot.

I'll agree with that. Day 5 is when the CL should be fully functional, but waiting two more days would ensure that it is there and you get a response.

Thanks for the help.  Can I get a bit of clarification...

What is a CL?

What about non-responders?  I think I understand that I give a shot on day 7 or so (Monday July 6th) then expect a heat 48-72 hours after that.  I am then guessing that some may not respond that way so I wait until day 10 (Thursday July 9th) to give another shot and then expect a heat for sure 48-72 hours from then?

Sorry, just want to make sure I have this figured properly.  Like I said, I will be speaking to my vet also, but I want to have as much background and advice as possible prior to that.

Also, is there much difference in conception when AIing on a short cycle as compared to a natural heat?

CL is a corpus luteum. Lutalyse regresses a CL. Since your heifer was in a standing heat, I think she will respond. No difference in conception rates, that I know of anyway.
