With commercial cattle prices the way they are, I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find a halter broke steer that has been started on feed for less than $1500. Good luck with the project if you find a steer that suits you.  (thumbsup)

I live in northwest oh and have some calves that would work for you. Only have a few cows and raise calves for my kids. My son is done showing this year and has a Believe in me shorthorn cross steer and also a sull payday heifer that would both be under 2000. let me know if your interested

Good steers can be bought right out of a salebarn for market price if you know what you are looking for. They wont be clipped or broke or fat. With calves at all time highs and 500 /600# calves bringing over $2.50# a $1500 dollar calf will be average price. If you know someone that knows what they are doing many salebarn operators will let you sort a couple off for club work and some people wont like this but real world cattle feeders will sort of the longer haired colored clubby types and they will be discounted.I bought a single out of a group of real good A.I. calves that was younger, hairy, and lighter for $.20 under what group brought that went to a great home that won a major show.Clip jobs, photo shopped pictures,A/C kept young calves that are full fed have their best day the day you load them.

True Story!!!  You are much better off buying green calves than the fat little ones!

Thanks Mark that calf is really green. He has only been washed twice and been on feed for 3 weeks. He is going to be a solid calf just don't have a big name but would like to get a little more than market price. I have always liked to buy calves back when we were in the market out of the pasture in their daily environment. Sometimes you can find a good one out of a cleanup bull that gets overlooked

I'm not sure if you specifically want papered shorthorns, but I have two shorthorn influenced steers we will have in our Legends of the South calf sale on Sept. 20th. Floor price is $1,500.  It will be broadcasted live on the internet so if you can't be there in person you can call a ringmen and bid. They're halter broke and absolute puppy dogs! The red and white one is a MAB and the blue roan is a JPJ.

Mark Tenenbaum has seen these calves twice now. He can give you an outsiders opinion on them.

The blue roan pictured is way better than the picture here-I thought Hed also be a full sib to the dam of the RWM MAB calf in the picture (whos a beast-and is going through a grow stage) and the MAB hiefer-which is the top calf in thier sale; That makes him a Yahtsee x Proud Jazz 50% Shorthorn O0
