I saved a picture of this bull on my phone as soon as I saw that offering on Facebook.

He's the best one in there, I thought.

he's an oddly american type looking bull than the normal bulls we tend to see from australia which in my view are sort of odd looking.

He looks good. I'd also note by the manure on his butt, he's eating good stuff. They don't feed grain down under right? So what's giving his manure the grain looking color? Just curious. I'd use that bull in a heartbeat.

All the bulls in this sale would be supplemented grain and some of them a lot. Some of the on property sales prepare their bulls on forage oats. Grass finishing might be growing but the majority are still feedlot finished so grain is still very important over there.

The Australians have msa grading systems that pay good premiums for the right cattle so I think what you are seeing is cattle that are maximising the value in the carcass. emphasis on the top third where 2/3 of the value is. Shorthorns are doing well in all their feedlot trails and look to be gaining some ground in popularity. Shorthorns had the highest average price at auction of all breeds last year, although over a smaller number but still a good sign.
His depth softness and round muscle are what I liked for a grass based system in New Zealand

Good, maybe his daughters will hold off cycling till they're 10-12 months old then.  I personally think we pushed the pendulum too far in selecting for increased sc.

Is age of puberty more related to % of mature weight or scrotal size. Compared to the other british breed bulls here we are still quite a bit smaller. Not sure the best way to fix a problem is to use the extreme in the other direction.

He's still a bull with a lot of positives. From what I have heard he and lot 42 are likely to be collected for export so if there is interest they will probably be available.

$8,149 Nationals record average
The 57th National Shorthorn Sale has again smashed it’s own record average, selling to a top of $42,000, with a 93% clearance and an outstanding overall average of $8,149, an increase of $1,935 on last years record average.

National Show and Sale committee President, Lester Job, Moombi Shorthorns, was extremely thrilled with the results for record breaking event, which attracted one of the largest galleries of buyers seen in years.

Driven by tremendous commercial demand for Shorthorn cattle, fuelled by the JBS Australia Thousand Guineas Shorthorn branded beef program, the number of registered bidders at the sale saw an increase of over 50% on 2015.

Topping this year’s sale was the only entry from Royalla Shorthorns, the Division 1 Reserve Champion, Royalla Rembrandt K413 (P). The 878-kilogram son of Royalla stud sire, Royalla Ostentatious G404, attracted a storm of bidding before being knocked down to a syndicate of Sprys Shorthorns, Outback Shorthorns and Morton Shorthorns, NZ.

The curve bending Rembrandt K413 boasted a +2.9 BW EBV with 400 Day Growth of +43 and 600 Day Growth of +61 and a Scrotal EBV of +2.7. Rembrandt also scanned a massive 129 sq. cm EMA and a scrotal measurement of 41 cms.

Rembrandt is from a Weebollabolla Theodore daughter, Marellan Dora 8074L, a proven donor in the Royalla herd, with embryos selling to the UK.

Gerald Spry, Sprys Shorthorns, said Rembrandt “has an awful lot of good to offer the Shorthorn breed.”

Rembrandt’s top price of $42,000 is the 3rd highest price ever paid for a Shorthorn sire in the history of the 57-year-old sale.

Volume vendors, Bayview Shorthorns, Yorketown, SA, sold a total of 5 sires for an overall average of $13,300 including Bayview Unique who sold for $30,000 and the Division 2 Reserve Champion, Bayview Vision K87, who sold for $15,000.

Other volume vendors included Ronelle Park / Trojon Shorthorns who sold 6 sires for an average of $8,417 including Ronelle Park Knockout K439 at $15,000.

Tarraganda Shorthorns sold 2 sires for an average of $11,500 including Tarraganda SS Kidson K13 who sold for $14,000.

Polldale Shorthorns offered 9 sires to an average of $8,167 whilst Moombi Shorthorns sold 9 sires to an average of $8,111 including the $18,000 Moombi William K15. Nero Shorthorns also offered 8 sires for an average of $6,500 and Wynyard Shorthorns offered 5 to an average of $7,800 including the $10,000 Wynyard Kaage K38.

The clearance rate of 93% at auction was an outstanding result for the long running multi vendor sale, with all passed in bulls sold directly after the auction, leaving a 100% clearance in the final wash up, a tremendous outcome for the event.

Interesting sales there down under!
Spry's and Outback seem to be buying great bulls. Do you by any chance have a picture of the top-priced bull?
Do you by any chance know who bought B. Unique?
There was a good looking white bull I saw in the catalogue as well, can't remember the lot number though.

B. Unique was purchased by Malton Shorthorns, Spencer Family shorthorns from Australia and Hamish Brown from New Zealand.

The Royalla bull has pretty good ebv data and a pedigree they were obviously keen on but I haven't seen a photo of him I liked yet.
