ii. A.I. Certificate: As of June 1, 2015, owners of A.I. bulls may declare their bull either an A.I. Certificate required bull or a non-A.I. certificate bull. Once a bull has been declared a non-A.I. certificate bull, the status will remain permanently. If required, an A.I. Certificate, properly executed, must accompany the application for registry (or be in the applicant’s ASA account) of each calf resulting from the artificial insemination of a dam to a non-owned, A.I. certificate required bull. All bulls, regardless of A.I. certificate status shall adhere to DNA Genotyping/Genetic Condition Testing requirements found in Rule III, Section 6,

Is there a way of knowing the designation of a bull, or a list of certificate and non-certificate bulls?

I received a pm asking if I wanted more info about AI certificates, so apparently my question was vague or lost in translation.  Therefore, I will attempt to reword my previous post.

In the past to register a calf from a Shorthorn AI sire, one had to buy an AI certificate.  The rules  have changed and the owners of an AI sire can require AI Certificates for the calves to be registered or they can designate the bull as a non-certificate bull.  The offspring of a non-certificate bull can be registered without the additional purchase of AI certificates.

My question:  how do you know a bulls designation?

I talked to jake Alden Friday about this. They are working on a list to post which do and don't. He stated that the reason they did that is because the association wants to get away from ai certs completely. If it is a non cert bull then you don't have to pay the ai fee either. Jake stated that they are hoping to have a majority of the bull be cert free in a couple of years and that the breeders will just go up on semen cost to cover the revenue lost from cert sales.

I think the move is a good one.  I personally believe that the volume of Shorthorn semen sales will increase which will offset the lost revenue from AI certificates for many bulls without increasing the semen price.

I agree. I dislike trying to figure out who to get certs from and waiting on them to call the association to release them. But then I can see the other side of the fence also. If you have a popular bull and charge as much as some do that is a lot of revenue.

I do like that they are including the shorthorn country fee in the membership cost now

I understand that there is money to be made selling AI certificates.  However, in my opinion some of the prices on "popular bulls" is not so much about making money as it a way of controlling who uses those genetics.
