This is interesting to me. Its moved to Kansas City and December and is not in conjunction with a cattle show.

I would find it interesting if the expressed goal of moving the breed forward commercially was substantiated by approving a policy relating to the registration status of known and potential carriers of known genetic defects that was consistent with the policy of the American Angus Association. Page 54 of Angus Breeders Guide http://www.angus.org/Pub/brg.pdf
Commercial success of Durham Reds, Durham Blacks or any Shorthorn cross could only be advanced by holding our registration and potential carrier identification process to the same standards as Angus.
Clear identification of potential carriers "by pedigree" and dna verified carrier free status of the progeny ( not steers, only bulls and breeding females) of potential carriers seems a responsibility we must assume in order to sell viable registered seed stock to commercial operations.
Perhaps the last thing an Angus based producer would want would be to breed another dimension of defects into their Shorthorn cross replacement heifers. It seems the last thing we would want would be for there to be a valid reason, down the road, not to breed those F1 replacements back to Shorthorn bulls without a lot of guesswork, homework and risk.

I hope it indicates a serious effort to improve the commercial appeal of the breed and the first block in building and promoting a brand that people in the real world will actually recognize.

Seems like we ran into a perfect storm with genetic defects surfacing. Its kinda overwhelming. It almost seems like you need to come up with a 10 year plan. It ain't gonna improve over night........the show ring will hold together just fine.

I like the idea of the ASA annual meetings being moved to a different time and a different stand alone venue. Having the meeting with a cattle show, does not allow for much time for anything but the election of ASA board members. I also like the idea of there being round table topics for discussion and lots of time for debate and planning for the future. I have attended some of the ASA meetings that were not much over an hour long. I really hope it works!
