My son's pureblood shorthorn ex-show heifer had her first calf the first week of May (pureblood bull calf). She is approximately 52 inches tall, is a great milk producer and is out of Starburst. The calf was sired by a Shorthorn bull named Fieser's Weston (reg# x4189303). This bull is considered a pretty easy calving bull (used on show heifers all the time according to owner) and has produced quite a few competitive show heifers. The bull calf was 65lbs when it was born.

I had a neighbor whose kids show cattle at an extremely high level look him over and recommend I either have my kids show him or sell him.  Since we don't raise shorthorn cattle, I am looking for some advice from the shorthorn breeders on this site to determine if he should remain a bull or become a steer. Do you consider these good enough bloodlines for the Shorthorn breed?

The mostly white bull calf is 75% shorthorn
The mostly red bull calf is the pureblood out of a starburst dam and sire is Feiser's Weston

I'm getting them cut or banded tomorrow.

When I load him and his momma up this week and haul to my lot behind my house, I plan to get some testing done on him to see if he is clean. I meant to include that in my original post but thought it was too long already.

Both Weston and his dam were 100 plus pounders at birth so I'd definitely recommend not using a bull like that on heifers but with your calf, it looks like Jake's Sierra brought enough low birthweight to the table to offset that a bit.

If for no other reason than there's more of a market for colored up show steers than there is bulls, I think you'll have a better shot at selling your calf for a premium as a show steer than you would trying to market him as a bull.

Wow. You surprised me with those birth weight numbers, especially since the owner of the bull uses him on his heifers. That definitely isn't they type of weights I want to see in his bloodlines. Now I understand why our ex shorthorn plus show heifer was bred to the same bull and had a bull calf weight between 85 and 90 lbs. He is an eye catcher as well but since he was kind of heavy, I am only interested in either having my kids show him or sell him.

I dont think anyone is more particular about bulls than Mr. Fieser, but it takes a long time to work the high birth weights of days gone by out of a cow herd. I'd also sell him as a steer- I bet he's a nice one.

Thanks for the information XBAR and librarian. I have been told by the gentleman that has seen them, that if we don't want to show them, we can put them in his on-line sale. My kids are really wanting to show some calves we raised, so they are making the decision tough. My plan right now is to just get them and their moms to the lot behind my house, get a creep feeder set up and watch how they grow.

I think you would be better off marketing them as steers. I just don't see bull material in either the white roan looks the be pretty shallow behind the shoulders and looks to me like he's going to have a lot of front end. I am not sure he would even make a competitive show steer. The darker roam steer may make a better show steer. I hope I don't sound too negative that is just what I see.
