We have some Shorthorn heifers we are getting ready to breed and have been looking at some different bulls to use. We were recommended TM Gus, The Bartender, and Rock & Roll Train. We have never used any of these bulls and I haven't seen many calves out of them that I'm aware of. Does anybody have any opinions on these bulls? Or if you have any better suggestions of bulls that are out crosses and good for heifers please let me know.

tm guss is pretty hot on here...  no experience with him, other than he won denver last year

I saw bartendar at denver last year walking back from wash racks--  good thing he wasn't on slats, he'd a fell through..  poof ball- also doubt he'd have any calves on the ground yet.

don't know if I'd call RnRT a calving ease, hiefer bull... just a little to big boned, and stout pedigreed...  although moderate...  I spoke to the AT clan about him, but hav forgotten most of our conversation... He is a bull thats on my short, very shorth list to use in the near future...  to moderate and stouten one up.  maybe they'll pop into this conversation...  I know he doesn't have any calves yet either!

A bull I'd suggest, especially if you want heifers and outcross would be Wildside... Think he'd do the trick for you.  We used a wildside/ vortec bull on our heifers this year.  Also, the Legacy 65 bull, I believe is safe for heifers, his owner could tell you better, but he's made some nice cattle over the years.

JPJ isn't outcross anymore, but he is safe for heifers too!

We're selling a TM Gus son on the MN State Shorthorn Sale on Feb 7th and we're anxiously awaiting an ET calf out of TM Gus and our donor cow CVF Homedale Myrtle Bo in about 3 1/2 weeks.   I'll attach a picture of Oakbar Windchester--the bull we're selling.   He was the first calf out of  our 2008 show heifer BFS Lovely Lady.  We are very pleased with him and we plan to use more Tm Gus in the future.

I would suggest our new herdsire, Hillside Leader. We purchased full possession and 1/2 semen rights in Leader from the Bales family in Tennessee. He had a 70 lb BW himself. His first calves are arriving now, and the heaviest calf to date is 78lb. All have been unassisted, including several from heifers. All have been vigorous at birth, dark colored and polled.

Hillside Leader is presently at Hawkeye Breeders at Adel, IA where he will he collected for the next several weeks. He will be there until at least late March - early April, as we are collecting him for Canada, Australia, and possibly New Zealand and the UK. If you are in the area, stop in and see him. I hear some leading breeders have already stopped there, and all reports have been good. Semen is available from Joe Bales or myself. Semen in US is $25/straw ( multiples of 5)  certificates $15 each. Semen in Canada $ 30/ straw ( multiples of 5)

If you want an outcross, I can suggest 2 Australian bulls suitable for heifers and available in the US and Canada.

One is The Grove Kookaburra W735, by Deerhorn Cruickshank out of The Grove Blue Dale 2nd. Kookaburra has been used on heifers with great success for a number of years, and is a trait leader for gestation length, below average for birthweight, and a trait leader by quite some margin for eye muscle (rib eye) area, retail beef yield and intramuscular fat. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of him with me, but here's a son and (extremely fat) daughter...

The second bull is Belmore Jackaroo Z109, by Shadybrook Scotty 83K and out of Trevino Actress 104th (by Belmore Washington N6). Jackaroo has very good calving ease and birthweight figures, good growth, and HUGE eye muscle. I think he's something special. Here's a pic of him (at the end of joining, having mated 52 cows, a few days before he was pulled out) and a daughter...

A&T Captain Obvious Reg # 4113971. He is available through Cattlevisions- recent ad on the inside back cover of the  shorthorn country. His daughters are beef cows and his sons are well accepted. There are videos still posted of sons and daughters on youtube- just search for Lakesideshorthorns.  The vigor in the calves is awesome. We calve his first set of daughters starting in March.
No semen available in Canada. Semen sales just opened last fall - he is an outcross to everything- no jazz, goldspear, vortec, stuff,Rodeo Drive, Trump and venture.

You should see a group of captains at Ohio Beef Expo - unless we sell em  all this week?

Welcome to the breed

I would strongly recommend ArSuLu Legacy 65. He has Gizmo in his pedigree, calving ease, homozygus polled, and a strong red gene. We have had great success with him, and semen is reasonable.

There are photos of his calves on our website at www.diamondmshorthorns.com

Well hell... I guess I'd better jump on the bandwagon- and do a better job of promoting my bull- and lining my pockets!  It seems that other than myself (on my first post) and a few other people above me--- everyone else is just 'recommending' their herd sires! Although, I'm sure everyone has a great bull- who will be the next breed changer- I'll just shut my mouth now!!!

Anyways, Why don't you breed to our bull- JJC Dr. Feelgood VT07.   reg number *x4134721

He's a Wildside x Vortec- giving you plenty of tommorrow 'outcross' options if you don't have any Vortec. NO Double Stuff, Trump, JPJ, Gizmo, Rodeo Drive, or Venture!!  He's a polled, 6.3 frame bull, with excellent color- especially for making blues, of which is a plus!! Dr Feelgood has been used on purebreds of all colors, and crossbreeds of every origin. We have also used him on heifers! Our bull has an excellent front end, a super/ massive hip, on an abundance of stoutness- and it's all coupled together with soundness, balance, and body!

We think Feelgood can sire excellent bulls and heifers. His pedigree wouldn't suggest anything different. Many Wildside females have been winning shows- and competing with the best of em- across the country- and most importantly many breeders can attest that those females will produce too!  Wildside himself is an outstanding 9 year old bull- his picture can be viewed on here by doing a search!- I can't attach more than 5 pictures, otherwise, I'd put one on!

Our bull also has many closeup shots of the great Steermaker and Cunia- (both parents are Steermaker grand-offspring).  And as we all know Steermaker is one of the only bulls in Shorthorn breed history to sire a National Champion bull, heifer, and steer!

Our bull also has the Steerplanet push- his breeder regularly visits this site, as do I! Also, he's an affordable semen'd bull costing only $15. and certs are also $15.

I will attach a picture of him, both profile and rear view, some calves, a one of Feelgood's mother at 7 years of age.

As ULuru stated, information and a picture can be found at the belmore website he listed.

They also have a pedigree and EPD info.
Interesting bull that goes back to U.S. and Canadian breeding.  Bulls in  his pedigree include Eionmor Mr. Gus 85C,
Dividend,Irish Mist, Mandalong Super Flag and also Muridale breeding.

The Belmore website has not been updated since 2005- the photo of Kookaburra there pictures him as a 2 year old, and doesn't do him justice. I have a recent pic somewhere just need to find it.
To research the bulls and their progeny, go to http://abri.une.edu.au/online/cgi-bin/i4.dll?1=313021&2=2431&3=56&5=2B3C2B3C3A.

Kookaburra's identifier is BDBW735, Jackaroo is IAWZ109.
I know these bulls as well, if not better, than anyone, and highly recommend them both.
