Whats everybody using to generate good shorty steers?  Got a large framed shorty cow I want to breed for a shorty colored calf.  Give me some suggestions.  Im thinking Radioactive or Ivy League.  Whats everybody think?

I'd use Double Stuff if it were me I guess.  Either of those bulls would probably work, but there are no Ivy League calves on the ground. I really like him though, and we're going to use him next year!  I'm wearing an Ivy League hat as I type this  ;)

our radio actives were pretty narrow, and frail out of big boned, chunky cows

d stuff or d vision, or really any of the vision stuff..

guess jpj could work too, if you want something newer

Double Vision has worked for terminal steer projects as he usually takes them down a tick in frame and stouten's them up. Jake' Proud jazz did not give us any additional bone neither did Gizmo but both did add body and rib shape. I have never used DOuble Stuff himself.

I had a large framed shortie and used double vision.he burned the frame down and put hair and a hip on the heifer calf.Ilike DV. I like JPJ, but the bull calf i had, lacked thickness .however the cow could have played a role in that .rusty

You didn't say what the TH or PHA status was on your cow.  If she carries either gene you need to be careful with Double Stuff or his sons.  I've used quite a bit of Double Stuff and Double Vision in the past and got some really good calves.  Unfortunately, before we could test for TH, I used him on some Th positive females and got 3 dead calves, too!!    A lot of people forget about the TH and PHA genes when they're planning for steers but it'll affect bull calves too, so keep it in mind.    If your cow is clean both ways you can use about anything you want and I'd probably recommend Double Stuff or Jakes Proud Jazz because their more proven than some of the younger sires.  I've seen some of the Double Visions get pretty tall out of big cows.

Good luck with your choice!!

Here is another option you can think about. If your cow has lots of volume and is definitely structurally correct, especially in her front third through her shoulders, and is Th and Pha free, you should consider Warhorse. he don't get used a lot anymore, but if you get one that is sound, with some volume, they can be very tough to get around. Awesome bone, with unbelieveable "Double Stuff" hair. Swanson farms and Bennetts use him some, with success. The good thing about ole Warhorse, the cow don't have to be real powerful,he duz most of the work.

Got to throw American Muscle in there... We have the best crop of calves we have ever had and I am finally happy with the male calves!

Mark, is Lucky Ralph a PHA carrier? I got one last year-and the cow was clean-so I believe he is. Have 2 this year-the hiefer(full sib to last years) is alot less extreme-hoping shes clean. You almost gotta use a carrier to change them. My bull Jr Walker was a carrier, but very few of his calves were. O0 <beer>

If you are looking for steers, I'd have to agree with the Warhorse suggestion.  I love JPJ for what he does, but you're probably not going to get a powerful steer there, we have had some really nice Radioactives but they can get too straight and he seems to only click with the right type of cows, I still like the Double Stuffs and depending on your cow is bred he may be a good option, we've had some luck with Double Vision but haven't used him much.

We have had some very good steers out of our bull AberTees The Professor.  We also now have semen on his son AT Rock N Roll Train.  I really think Rock N Roll Train will make better steers than his sire.  He is small framed, some would say too small.  He is very clubby, some would say too clubby--you get the picture.  Both are THF/PHAF.

Go to www.abertees.com to see pictures of both bulls and some offspring of Professor.
