Oh to be in your shoes.  We can only afford semen and the good advise of friends. But, I would say Sullivan and Cyclone Trace would be a great place to start. But, always remember that ugly people have beautiful children. So, they can come from anywhere. I think the search is more fun than the find. Have fun!

The best show  cattle Ive seen for the money-with real life EPDS-are the ones at Vogel Family in Iowa. They stand pretty well at the top of things everywhere-and place above $12000-25000 hiefers on a REGULAR BASIS. WO Shorthorns also in Iowa-has some VERY good hiefers-hes private treaty dispersing, and selling calves he normally wouldnt sell-and an Sp family on here just bought a good one.Nancy Grathwohl Heter:-DTR Shorthorns in Kansas-has 2 ET calves out of Ace of Diamonds that are national quality-see them in thier ad on Show Circuit-Aug issue. She and Deertrail Ranch where she grew up-probably won more classes with hiefers than anyone in the breed. They also won Louisville with bulls more times  than anyone .The best show-MODERATE-CLUBBIE cattle Ive seen around-are Jeff Cornell-Feeder Duck,on here-win more of those shows for the money. The best place to buy one is the place you feel the most comfortable buying one.  Talk to those breeders and find out what they will do for after you hand them a check.  Find out more about the calf parents and the owners than just looking at an individual animal.  Are they going to help you as she becomes a cow? What types of things will they help you with, gaurentee, and what does that guarentee mean. There is a lot that goes into a decision as to where I am going to spend my hardly earned money.  I don't always have a lot to spend, but I look for a long time before I go and spend it.

Depends on what your budget is.

Not true. Cates has a page that shows several winners under 5k so does SULL.

Yea, it is true. If your budget $1750 then you won't do much good at those 2 sales. As a salesperson for a living,  you find out what your customers' needs are & then what their budget is. There is no sense in spending time talking about a $60k paintbooth when all they have to spend or want to spend is $15k.

You know it is sad when the breed has come to a point when it is needed to advertise that cattle can be purchased in the $4000 dollar range.

Sullivan, cyclone trace, Cates, V8, WHR, Little Cedar, Greenhorn, K-Kim, KOLT, DJS. There are a lot more places with very nice cattle but here are some places to start.

Do your homework!  We're not privileged enough to say our budget is "high", but I would think that you still want to get the most you can get for your money.  We have done business with some of those listed in the shortii response and can say we've had some of the best experiences of our lives - better than we ever imagined!  Thus leading to our earned respect and repeat business.

Sadly, from the same list we can say we've have had the single most worst experience of our lives... the kind that still makes you want to vomit or fight or both when you think about it.

Just be cautious who you choose to do business with especially since you plan to produce down the road.  Some will remember you and provide guidance because they are just that supportive - fine folks as we call 'em.  Some will remember you only because they got the best of you.  Learning from mistakes is easier for us since we have a much smaller budget, just be cautious and do your homework as you seem to be doing now.  Best of luck to you!

I was just listing people off. I have only dealt with a hand full of these breeders. Like I said there are many other good breeders out there

There are good ones out there that can be bought reasonable if you are willing to put the time in to find them. All these farms listed have good cattle that can win and produce. One of the best prospects I've seen so far ( all the catalogs are not out yet ) is Lot 1B at Cates. I'm sure there will be others.

Is it a given that birth dates and weights should be questioned on all these show cattle?
