We give a 7 or 8 way shot at birth here. Mostly because we have problems with blackleg and enterotoxemia in our area and the 7 way shot helps with both of those. We put dehorn paste on some at birth as well.

Ours get a TSV-2/Naselgen, a vitamin A,D & E shot and a shot of Bo-Se for the selenium when we weight them and tag them.  Also iodine the navel as soon after birth as we can.

None unless there's an obvious problem.  I let Mamacow transfer the immunity the calf needs.  I feed a loose mineral combo that contains the maximum allowable Selenium so although Michigan is defficient, I've never needed to administer a BoSe shot.  Knock on wood!  I'd have no problem giving it if the calf showed weakness or failure to thrive.

We don't normally give anything to newborns.. just make sure they get dry & get a good dose of colostrum.  However, if there is any problems, we've given BoSe, & other shots as needed.  On a rare occasion where we have problems, we'll also give the oral vaccine shortly after birth.
We usually give the heifers a Scour shot about 4 - 6 weeks pre-calving.

I've always been told not to give them any sort of vaccination under 3 months. Vitamins and minerals I'd think are ok, but aren't they un needed? I guess you'd need to talk to your vet or a very experienced person in the area to know if you need to be giving something that is area specific.

We don't give anything unless the calves are sluggish, and then we give BoSe if we think it's needed.

We give 8-way, iodine the naval, and a scour guard pill that I can't remeber the name of.

A lady vet told me to give Alpha 7 at birth. Had nothing but good luck with it. And I didn't have a problem before, but my neighbors do not vaccinate for ANYTHING, so I figure $1 a calf is worth it.

I say use what works for you.

I think that's right on showheifer, 1000 cow herds or all the way down to 100 cow herds around me all give alpha 7 including myself, an oil based 7=way, seems to have more response  than normal 7-way and have had good luck.

I've been asked this question myself many times, not only on this forum, but others .

For years and years I have always had the same response.

ALPHA-7 -- this Clostridial product was formulated to be more imuno responsive for NEW born calves. I absolutely will not be without this product at calving time, and is very important to get the response you need, to get it in them ASAP -- mine get it before they even get up and for sure, before they nurse. Of course, I only have a dozen cows, so I would have no excuse not to.

Reason -- I will also maintain this thought -- that a very high percentage, if not MOST, of the scours related problems calves have are due to Clostridial infection soon after birth, It is in the ground in every pasture in this country as far as I am concerned. Depending on the year, whether or not it is frozen or wet, this bug ( s ) - there are several - will either cause rapid problems - ie scours with no real cure and a lingering poor doing calf, OR, it will quietly sit and wait for the day that you go notice you have a dead calf -- no apparent reason.

Entero-toxemia - over eating disease (ARG), C-D -- all the same . Clostridium Perfringens types C-D are the main or most publisized, but there are several more -- even type A.

Bottom line is, if I had just enough cash to buy one thing for these babies, -- trust me -- it will always be Akpha - 7 for newborns. I also , at 30 days, booster them with the more common name -- Vision 7 or 8.

I give this behind the front leg so as not to see a lump if one forms. This is  a fairly invasive vaccine -- in the oil form, and will leave some pretty hefty lumps if given in the neck -- especially if it accidently goes IM instead of Sub Q.

Thats my take on Alpha 7 -- worth it's weight in gold on my place!

Here in OH, we are Selenium defficient, so we give a BoSE shot for that. We also give a B12 shot to give them a jumpstart.

the less you touch them with a needle, the better chance you have of mot introducing problems.

I give a MutiMin and a First Defense bolus when we weigh and tag.  The caves get a Viaion 7 sommus when the cows get their pre-breeding shots.
