I plan on buying my spoiled nephew an aluminium chute in the near future.  At the shows we have been to this fall, I have seen more whole chutes than half ones.  Is there a reason for this?  I will say that my kid has a all female pitt crew...me, his mom and his grandma so if we can get buy with the lighter one...than all the better. But I knew the pros would have an answer for me:)  THANKS

I love my half chute, but there are a few things you need to consider before buying one for yourself.  First off, if there is ever a chance that you all will be putting a calf that isn't fully broke in the chute, do not get a half chute.  It is a disaster waiting to happen if your calves aren't used to being in a chute.  Second, half chutes are harder to pack in a standard trailer.  they are longer than a traditional chute and require more room.  I built a bracket on the side of my trailer to haul mine.  Lastly, a half chute is not as durable as a regular chute.  If you plan on using the chute at home in the barn and at shows, you will probably bend it up pretty bad.  They just aren't built as strong.

I hope this helps out.

If your calves are broke and stand well in a chute, I would recommend them. They are much lighter so make for easier travel to shows.  I would not put unbroke calves in one however....

Thanks so much for your input:) we have a regular steel chute right now so for green calves we are covered but I really appreciate you guys thinking of that for me. And I didn't realize that they were longer so that helps as well (hopefully we can work out a bracket for the side of the trailer-fantastic idea!) thanks in advance for others that might want to give their thoughts...but I am thinking I'm gonna get the half chute...now here's the question:

WHAT BRAND? I live near all aluminum and have pretty easy access to Sullivan's...thoughts?

I love my half chute from All Aluminum. Same comments as above....and I also have brackets on the side of my trailer for hauling it.

Ditto on the comments on the half chute-----NOT for unbroke or fidgety calves......if you only get one chute, get the full chute!  But...we have one and love it....we take one of each.. It is great to hold a calf that is done being fitted or a calf between classes....really handy!
