If you are feeding out a smaller herd (2 or 3 cow) is it better to use a feed like purina then mixing your own feed?

Hey off top of anyone's head, do you know the basic % or make up of "cob" or "wet cob"?  Corn, oats, barley?  Is it equal amounts?  The reason I ask is we have had great luck mixing a fairly cheap processed/textured feed called "All Pro 14%" Made by Rogue Feeds in So. Oregon with regular old wet cob.  Earlier in life we use a 2-1 ration 14% to cob.  Then later in life we switch to a almost 50/50 ratio. Then of course we add corn to help with the finishing.  Top dress with Diamond V yeast and Loomix cattle lick / pour on stuff (we just get in 5 gallon buckets from dealer).  Steer gaining 4.3 pounds a day on a ration of 8 lbs wet cob + 6.5 lbs of All pro 14% textured feed and 1/2 lb of steam rolled corn, along with yeast and Loomix fed twice a day.

Hope these charts help answer your questions.

That's called 'all stock feed' or sweet feed... it's promoted to be good for all species- but in reailty-- it's not good for anything... Most often it's corn and filler soaked in liquid molasis.. check the feed tag on it...

I understand the "All stock" feeds are pretty generic and cheap.  But by mixing it with cheap old wet cob we really have had great results including a county fair champ. Maybe ours is a little better quality than most?  And at $11.50 a bag instead of $16-$20 a bag I can't complain.  And I guess if over a 4 lb per day gain is crappy in 90 degree plus weather is horrible, maybe I should find something different? I am trying to get my mill to help me with AAOK's recipe but that is another story.  But I'm not a rich man, nor do I have a website or blog to show our success.  The initial post was somene trying to find out what is working for others as far as show feed.  I gave my honest response and results we have been getting.

I use a grand-4t-fyer custom mix ration that my local feed store mixes for me that I have had a great deal of results. I modify it slightly to be used for creep. It makes the weaning process alot easier as calves are use to similar taste in the feeder as compared to when they are weaned and depending upon it. This ration is about $11-12 a bag. I would be more than happy to share if there is any interest.

I agree I feed and sell all of ROWE products in NE IN.  The 49's and 43's have worked really well for me and my customers.  Price per bag is around 1 to 2 dollars cheaper than any other bag feeds in my area that i have found with the same results.

Feed is really going up! I get my feed custom mixed (AAOK's recipe, modified just a bit) and go through about a ton every 20 days. Back in May, it averaged $330/ton. Just got another load today, up to $365/ton! Yikes! Glad our last show, State Fair, is just about two weeks away. A bunch will get pulled off after that, with no grass and dropping hay like winter feeding....
