New to the show cattle world and need a good feed ratio to feed show heifers.  Also, how much should I be feeding them?  Have a scale to weigh feed, but don't really know what the weight of feed they should be consuming right now.  All answers and opinions are very much appreciated!

Should I change the feed formula for a heifer and a steer?  And is there a chart out there anywhere that shows the feed weight that I should be feeding the calves by the weight of the calves?

It really depends on your ration and what your goals are. I mix a ration that is very similar to aaok's ration. I can grow and finish steers giving them 2 to 2 1/2% of their body weight. Our heifers I grow out on the same ration at 1 1/2% of their body weight. If I need to fatten one a little faster I'll go as high as 2%. Everyone gets as much hay as they care to eat. Hope this helps.

Most people like to keep their rations a secret. I've researched rations and beef nutrition on and off for years (in my spare time), trying to find that magic ration. This is what we use:

Steers-per ton
45.5% Cracked corn
10% Steam Rolled Barley
15% Whole oats
4.5% Cottonseed hulls
1.25% Soybean oil
3.75% Liquid molasses
20% Honor Show Chow Grand 4T Fyer

Heifers-per ton
43% Cracked corn
21% Whole oats
10% Dry beet pulp shreds
6% Liquid molasses
20% Honor Show Chow Grand 4T Fyer
