I’m planning on getting a steer for Texas majors, I thought they classify breeds at shows based on defining characteristics. I was then told by an AST that the  steer would need papers. The breeder I talked to said there is no need for papers. Do I need papers and what is included on them? What other things should I question about before buying a steer?

Decide what breed you want and spend some time looking for a complete one at a decent price. There are lots of big named guys that offer full service fitting til the end but it wont be cheap. There are some deals to be had on online sales, classifieds, and social media pages occasionally too. No papers are needed for steers in Texas as long as they have the breed characteristics in the eyes of the check in guys, unless they've just changed this in the last 3 months.  Good luck
