My daughter has a show steer that is broke he will let you do anything with him except get behind him where he can't see you and then if you touch his back legs he will kick you and not just a little kick it is full force. We've tried a  long stick with a glove so if he does try to kick no one will get hurt and we touch his back feet and he does ok with that and we've also tried a stick with a comb on it and he goes crazy. Please help there's no way we could take him to a show and put us and other people in danger. Any advice will be appreciated.

How long have you had the steer/been working with him??
We have had this steer since the end of March and have been working him ever since we got him. We also have another steer that acts like a big o baby and I would of thought he would of watched and leared a little from us messing with him. We put a nose ring in him the other day and has helped alot for his behavior but not the kicking.

Try feeding him Glu-coat for a month and see if he doesn't loose his edge. It worked on one we had last year.
If he is kicking while you are working on him, put him in a chute, throw a rope around his flanks and tie him to one side, the rope wont allow him to kick, then rinse, blow out and comb while hes tied by the flanks, maybe he will figure out your not trying to hurt him. I have attached a picture to give you an idea of where the rope goes.

Im confused about the rope idea, In bull riding the bucking strap goes there to make them buck, when it comes off their all fine walking around. Wont this idea do the same thing as a bucking strap? ???

It is a cheap version of the defice Sullivan's sells to put on cattle that kick. A flank strap does not allow bucking bulls to kick in the conventional way, they can kick back with both feet but not to the side or forward.

I only use it when the animal is past the fear part of learning and has a behavioral problem.

We have also put them in the wash rack and spray water on them and let them kick at it, just keep rinsing on them until the tire themselves out kicking at water.
They will get over it with time.

We have tied them up and sprayed them with a hose, focusing on the rear legs, and just let them kick until they tire out, and realize they are not getting hurt.  We have also used a broom, and "brushed" them with it, or just layed the broom on top of their hip, and let them kick until again they realize they are not getting hurt.  Usually 2-3 sessions of this and they stop kicking.  Be safe!
