What exactly do you folks look for in show steers?  Does this animal have any of those attributes?  It's a 3 way cross, 1/2 Shorthorn, 1/4 Galloway, 1/4 Angus.  It doesn't show much in this picture, but he is a hairy rascal.  Just curious, there are some 4H kids that have been asking about calves.  He's not banded yet, does it make a difference how young or old they are banded?

Thats a nice steer, the nice thing about him is you know he will feed well. If you cut him now you won't have any problems.

I agree he will feed well.  It is not to late to band him.  He looks like he has some good parts.  Some won't like him if he has to much leather under his neck.  But if he is hairy, that will clean-up some.

Thanks, I don't want the kids to waste their time.  Looking at Mill Iron's calf pictures is what got me thinking that raising low input cattle, reproductively efficient cattle with good carcass  and raising stuff to take to the fair are not necessarily conflicting goals. Guess I was just slow to realize this.  The low input cattle should get fatten right up if they see any grain at all.  Then the kids won't have to spend so much on feed. I'm all for any kid that wants to spend time with animals instead of video games.
I thought that leather was just room to grow?  These guys get real deep.

I think he has the right parts to make a show calf. He has great lines, you know he willl feed. BUT, I would have him cut. Most of the folks in our area cut their show steers for the cod to fill. To each their own. Nice calf!
