We had a angus calf born on Monday.  She seemed to do well initially, however since yesterday she has gone down hill.  She isn't nursing, we bottle fed her yesterday, but now we have tube fed her 3 times today.  We have used electrolyte replacer and milk replacer.  She doesn't stand, she is weak and grunty.  We have injected her with LA 200 yesterday and today.  Any ideas?  Also can milk replacer go bad? It doesn't smell funny but I am not sure if it's stll good.  Any help whatsoever will be greatly appreciated.  Also we live in Wisconsin, it was cold earlier in the week but has been in the 40's the past 2 days.  She has been kept inside but went outside for a couple of hours yesterday.

To me the grunting sounds like it is respiratory. Have her checked out by a vet ASAP. I would start some high powered broad spectum antibiotics in the mean time. Good luck and I hope all turns out well!

We just treated a calf today (3 weeks old) with Draxxin and Banamine, started yesterday with raspy breathing, rapid respiration, and shivering. Called the vet and that is what he gave us to give her. Vet told us respitary issues are big right now. Hopefully you can gets some stronger meds in your calf!

I also felt it seemed respiratory however her respirations are normal and she doesn't have a snotty nose. She was shivering earlier though.  We do have Naxel on hand and have used that for respiratory illness in a cow before. Have you heard of that?

I have used Naxcel with pigs, never with cattle (but that was several years ago). Anything is better than nothing, or just LA 200 in my opinion. Our embryo bull calf had the same symptoms at three weeks of age (back in December) and we gave him the same meds, and 48 hours later he was up and playing again. Neither calf had snotty noses, just a rapid respiration and the shivering and not getting up to play like normal. I really watch our babies, since we have so few I like to watch them play and ponder thier future. So when one does not get up and play with the others, I notice right away. When you only have 5 or 6 calves a year, losing one is a huge deal!
Good luck!

We gave the Naxel this morning and continued with the tube feedings.  Twice today and I plan on getting one more in this evening.  She continues to be grunty, but no worse.  We were concerned about the possibility of it being white muscle disease. So this morning we injected Bo Se as well. This morning she had some nystagmus but that has since resolved.  She still can't stand and her neck was really stiff this morning and in a very odd position.
