Does anyone know of any good skillathon study materials to look at on the web or post some questions you've encountered. Thanks

I have an entire tote full of materials from when I was doing them, the actual tests, my test results, study material-- and do have plenty of materials from when I was sponsoring the tests myself.  My actual contest materials came from the Premier Stockman's practice contest, Louisville, and other various contests like the Superior Young Producers contest at IL State Fair.

but that isn't going to do you much good, unless I scan them for you-- which can happen.... except I think that stuff is still down at my parent's place...

There was a website that we  used to use some-- but I don't have the slightest amount of idea to send you to it.

Hey Zach, we hosted the Simmental Nationals last year and I was in charge of securing resources. For us (Simmental), you have to be able to identify feed stuffs (we had 25 on the list, including different types of hay) - so different types of corn, wheat, oats, barley, minerals, cotton seed, beet pulp, soybean (meal and pellets), and such. Then there was the tools portion; which could have every type of tool used in the cattle industry (we've had AI equipment, dehorners, branders, vet stuff, emasculator, and such), then there was a slide show, that had different types of breeds that had to be identified. Diseases also. Oh, and kinda new was knowing what the different genetic defects look like, like AM, Th, PHA, and such. I am sure I am forgetting something, oh yeah, meats - cuts and grading and such...

Hope that helps a little.

I'm not sure if there is a version on the web, but the resource books put out by Ohio State University are great. The have ones for beef, sheep, swine and goats. They are not terribly in depth in anyone area, just a good base of general knowledge. They cover breeds, feed stuffs, conformation and carcass cuts, handling practices, disease and general care. They are the basis of every quiz bowl and skillathon I and my sisters have ever been to here in the Midwest. Some event coordinators even take there topics and questions directly from these books and the youth judging team I coached studied them religiously. Here's the link to buy them on the U's online book store.http://estore.osu-extension.org/productdetails.cfm?PC=2313 If you can get your hands on one, I would highly recommend it! Their extension site also has some great information.  Best of luck!
