Does anybody know the formula for getting a mature cow weight estimate based off of steer hot carcass weights?

Do you mean the live weight of the animal that you have the hot weight of?  I don't think there is any possible way to tell the mother's weight based on the hot weight of her calf.

yeah I must have been thinking something else that would be nice though, food for thought had some calves go high choice yg 1 hcw 833 and dollared out at $1766 and had a select yg 1 hcw 1005 dollar out at $2031 we got billed the same for the pen so looks like extra pounds paid the bills....

You should be able to take the hot carcass weight and divide it by about 63% (plus or minus based on how wasty or not wasty it was)...833/.63=1322#.  I'm not sure what the price difference between choice and select right now, but a couple months ago it was only $5-6 I think therefore, yes, weight would pay out more if there wasn't much value difference.  Also, there typically isn't a price difference for high choice versus low choice...as far as I've ever known.

Price would be the same for low choice and high choice.
Mill Iron A - Did you have these animals fed out some place?  I wonder what they were feeding and what age were they at harvest?  A yg 1 select weighing at 1005 lbs  is interesting to me.  So was the calf not finished or just leaner genetics, large framed (surely live weight was 1500 -1600lbs)?

There is no premium between high choice and low choice other than high choice gets us into a different grid program that gives is a bump premium wise. The cattle were born in may june backgrounded through the winter then shipped in august and killed in december so 18 months ish. We have char red angus and sometimes we get an oops and get 3/4 char.  I'm guessing that was the case.
