We have a My Turn steer, born 3-03-10 out of an OCC Legend cow. Is there any ideas on slowing down the growht/frame on this calf?

I wouldn't think that you would have to worry about anything with occ in it getn too big however you can pour a hotter finish type ration to him thatd definately slow his grow down

So you would use a lower protein higher fat and starch ration? I have one that is going to be a bit of a struggle to keep in the box.  So I am following this thread.

Pretty much what folks have said. YOu can do a couple of things but you have to be caution not to burn one up with too high fat content and they go off feed totally. How do you get your feed currently? Bagged or milled? If milled, we work with some wonderful people that come and actually look at our calves and adjust the ration accordingly. It is a tricky balabce. I would say the Legend is contributing to your rate of gain as they are usually pretty easy doing cattle that grow. What is your target finish date? What is your target finish height? Somethings can't be changed. Do you know the mature height of any of the this calves siblings? Lot of this information can help modify your program.

I AM GETTING OUR FEED FROM A MILL. IT IS 375 POUNDS CORN, 300 POUNDS OATS, 10 LIQUID FAT, 25 LIQUID MOLASSES, 90 COTTONSEED HULLS, 200 GRAND 4-T FYER. OUR FAIR IS AUGUST 1ST. NO WEIGH BACKS. SO HE CAN WEIGH OVER 1400 AND SHRINK BACK.
IS THIS RATION OK FOR NOW?

Below are the three High Energy rations using Grand 4-T Fyer recommended by Purina.  For slowing growth, I would go with the 60% Corn.

54.0% Corn
15.0% Oats
4.50% Cottonseed hulls
1.50% Power Fuel™
5.00% Molasses
20.0% Grand 4-T-Fyer™

45.5% Corn
15.0% Oats
10.0% Barley
4.50% Cottonseed hulls
1.25% Soybean Oil
3.75% Molasses
20.0% Grand 4-T-Fyer™

60.0% Corn
15.0% Oats
5.00% Molasses
20.0% Grand 4-T-Fyer™

In the case of Holsteins and other dairy type steers. .these cattle are getting the corn poored to them at a very early age, to stunt frame growth, which in tern should shorten days on feed.

MY RATION HAS 9% COTTONSEED HULLS. IS THIS TOO MUCH? SHOULD I GO TO 4.5% HULLS?  I LIKE THE FIRST RATION OF THE THREE THAT WERE LISTED.

If you are constantly cutting or adding ingredients to your ration, don't expect to ever have much success.  A ration needs to be BALANCED to how your calves need to be fed, and left alone.

Thanks for the rations AAOK.  Can you PM me some thoughts on what situations these different rations would be best fed?  You seem to be the one to learn from when it comes to rations.  I am currently feeding your ration and calves are doing great but just want to know more about feeding. Thanks.

Since your Steer is framy, I would say, Yes; feed it all the way.  Just check weight and condition regularlly toward the end, and back off, or pour on the feed.
