sold the fall red angus x jersey heifer calves today...  1.15-1.20.....

sold a spotted up shorthorn bull calf today 1.25...

sold a 3 mo old bottle calf for over $300

anybody getting this? or better or worse??

kinda suprised me that red, and dairy influenced and shorthorn calves brought this much.. Usually they're like .60 across the boards...

I wonder what the black steer calves would have brough if I would have cashed in on them this week....  I think I'll hang onto them for another round though.

Your about 3 weeks off the high, SFR had 1.60 for 6weight steers.  However, you cant complain about getting that kind of money for shorthorns, let alone dairy influence shorthorns.  Around here they seem to have backed off around 10 bucks from the high.  Also your $300 bottle calf, can someone explain the economics of that to me, I just don't get spending that kind of money for a calf to put on a cow.

bottle calves were weaned.. born in jan...  weaned and on grain...  I can't figure out why somebody would spend that either on something that you know will need grain put into it for quite some time..

where did you sale at? What state? I have a cow/calf pair I had for sale for awhile & had no takers, so I think I'm just going to ship them. However, I'm debating. I don't want to take them and only get $500 out of them. I would prefer at least $1500. Thats only half of what I have in them. It's a hard decision!

With feeders consistently bringing $1000+ these days, lighter calves are bringing a bunch - at least where there's something for them to eat.  We (meaning the sale barn I work for) sold some 245# steers for $2.12 and some 350# steers for $1.95 a month ago.  But a month ago buyers were betting big that it would've rained by now (here in western OK), it's quite a bit softer here right now.  Getting quite a few better quality, good aged breds and pairs as grass is getting really scarce.  Last week we sold a draft of 4 year old black cows with 150 - 200# calves for $1650, our highest pairs this week were $1350.

The truth, it seems like when the market is really hot, the discounts are alot smaller for the ones that tend to get really cheap the rest of the time.

yup, right now.. seems to be the time to sell those little calves..  I think we are going to go ahead and sell the rest of our calves at the next sale...  This will be the blacks, and the good calves.  ...  I usually hate selliing to the local sale barn...  I just hate it..  .I rank them almost as low as the United Reducers, not quite as bad.. but close...  Theives they are.

Southern IL.. but in Western IL where i live, the prices have been much better...

I just don't see what's driving the price up.. It sure isn't corn??? I guess it's the thought of buuying now, kicking on grass, and reselling in the fall with little input...  but it sure isn't the price of grain...

the price is up because there hs been a decrese in the number of cattle in our nation.  beef prices are rising as well as grain.  we are catching up with the other sectors of the market.

The prices here have been really good. The flip side is XL just closed their plant in Calgary and another one in Idaho. Laid off 500 workers at both sites. I'm attaching an article. In the article they claim ranchers are keeping back the cows rather than shipping but anyone I talk to is taking the opportunity to cull. I think the cow herd has shrunk even more than they think because for two years there has been a lot of cows shipped.
