Coyote, I like your Gay Lad heifer. She looks like she will make a good cow. What is the breeding on her dam's side?  I still have semen from Cumberland Gay Lad as well. I flushed our Elsie's J-Lo 3T cow to him and had an excellent flush. Seeinf the semen was so old, I had it checked before we did the flush and they said it was some of the best semen they had seen that year.

Her mother is a full sister to Muridale Buster 14 K.

Cool... a nice heifer with a very unique combination of genetics! There won't be another in the breed that is bred like her

So for those of you that are on the "old semen hunt" ..... ask a old guy first.

Dont assume "light birthweights" .... nobody at least in the US weighed calves, even when performance testing started in the 70's the "bw" was just a standard number and they all used 'real 205 weights based on the standard bw .

I asked Dad ( 82 ) "did you weigh calves back then?" no we used the standard number.

All I am saying: I think the use of old sh genetics brings you a "traditional look"... but do not assume low bw , gooood udders and good fertility- the measure of calving intervals might matter more now ? Do you research. economics is more popular now then ever.

I have to agree that the old semen isn't always the answer and a lot of it should be left in the past but when used in an educated fashion we can bring back a lot of the traditional characteristics in a modern package.  I feel that the first cross won't be as impressive as the second generation away from them.

That's one deep bodied heifer calf! I think blending some of these old sires with today's genetics gives the breed an unique opportunity to actually expand our genetic base as a lot of those genetics were lost chasing the ribbons for one fad or the other. I don't think Cumberland Gay Lad was ever noted as show ring sire but more for performance in his time. Some of these old sires that are available came from pretty practical programs and are bloodlines that actually went against the trend of the popular cattle at the time they were born.

Nice looking bull.  Looks a tad stiff on his right side but might be hill or jus a couple of steps.

He probably has too mush set to his hock to walk in the show rink as they seem to like stilts for some reason

The video reminded me of the lord of the rings walking around an impressive beast.

I'd have to say that is a pretty memorable video. Good job.

This morning I was doing a cow check and I found Diamond Written Baroness 8W with a heifer calf sired by a Weston Ablo son.  Weston Ablo was sired by Weston Adventure and out of a cow by Weston Dynamo.  Needless to say I am very excited about this heifer

There are a lot of fabulous animals in the Muridale program!!! If I wasn't already a Shorthorn fan their females would definitely  have me considering even just dabbling.  ;D
