I've been looking for any info on this defect - is there any testing currently available?  In our rather small cow herd (10-12 cows) seems like we end up with 1 calf every other year or every few years that this crops up in - the first 2 calves (back 8 or 9 years ago) we shipped the cow when she had 2 calves in a row, had a heifer calf 3 years ago that we had to put down at 4 mo. of age,  had a calf last year that that appeared to have a mild version of this, and now this year we have 1 calf who is straight on his back legs who I am concerned may develop this as he gets older.  At least in our cows there has been no link for bloodlines where this is cropping up (other than our cows are predominantly Maine and Shorthorn bred cows).  Just wondering if there is a test out there for this yet?

No there's not a test.  But I wouldn't rule it our from occurring in any Maine bloodlines.  We had one particular bull in our herd that caused us problems with it, but it's not unique to any breed.  Best thing you can do is cull the cows that have affected calves unless you want to keep dealing with it.
