I have a cracker of a steer that we are currently breaking in. He is a Speckle ParkXLimo X Murray Grey (We are in Australia). I have high hopes for him if we can get the fat cover on that rump in time. Would welcome any thoughts/opinions on him. In the photos he is 9 months old.
We are having a fair bit of trouble getting him to lead. He will either not move at all and when he does move he puts his head down and tries to run. The students are doing their best with him but he is incredibly strong. in the past I have used a tractor or donkey but we have no donkey and no appropriate implements to tow him behind the tractor. I would really appreciate any advice. We are using a hackamore now and I will probably nose ring him next week.
Thanks! :)

Do you have another animal you could tie him to when leading? Do you work him alone and how long have you been working him? Does he stand tied for any length of time? Do you walk him to water or feed?

OH Breeder, I have only ever tied up to a donkey. We have two other steers that lead well, do you mean tie them up to one of them for a few hours? He stands tied and we brush him and wash him and he gets a lot of love from the students. It is just leading him that he disagrees with. We have been working him for 5 weeks now. I have never walked him to water or feed, is that helpful? Thanks for your help

I would leave him tied up and walk him to water and feed. If he doesnt want to lead he doesnt get either. He will eventually learn to lead by doing that

Great advice; this is how I used to break my bulls in.

My Daughter always broke her own steers, and she always broke them all the same way. Circle them in a small pen.  Make  them untracked with a forward motion. You will have control of the head and they will learn to follow their nose.  She broke her Brahman x 's and exotics this way. Only when you have control of their nose is when you go to a larger working pen. Your calf will always try the person leading it since it's has got away before. My favorite saying that my kids know well- you gotta be smarter than the animal you are working with!  Good luck! :)
