Has anyone used spelt in their show rations? If so, what does it replace and what are you trying to accomplish by feeding it. Thanks in advance for any advice.
Haven't seen or heard of it since the 50's, a part of the wheat family, feed values along the lines of oats and barley. We used to feed it to hogs, did well on it but maybe 50 years makes things a little foggy.
We grow our own. It's about 15% protein and with the hull, has a little more bulk/fiber.
I've came up with a 12.5% all around ration using sunglo's showcalf concentrate. We use our own corn and spelts and add beet pulp, barley, cotton seed hulls and molasses.
I feed our show and sale calves this mix along with sunglo full body.
One of our jan angus sale heifers that's been on this mix all summer.
