With all the new types of tillage, what is everyones favorite for your primary, deep till tillage and your secondary/finishing rounds?  We would be pulling with a '84 JD 4450 MFWD with duals.  It is rated to 140 HP.  FOr the guys with the vertical tillage discs with the new blades, such as the CIH Turbo, Great Plains Turbo Till, etc. what do you think of them? Do they leave a good, level seedbed?

"Baskets" seem to be the new thing, but they come with a price.  If buying a used piece of equiptment, would you spend $X amount of dollars more to get a piece with baskets versus one with drags, no baskets?  They seem to really "de-clod" the dirt and break up stalks and organic matter even more.

As far as HP requirements, could a 30 year old 140 HP tracor pull a DMI 530B 5 shank ripper in some sandier soil?  Links are posted below.

Also check out my post titled 'JD 4450'.  Thanks!

On the deep tillage rip it if you have to but only in the fall. The verticle machines are great and I love them but they are also always getting better machines made every year. With that being said Huiniker from Minnesota has the best machine out there IMO. Don't buy one rent it if you can, they are always getting better remember that. You will need more H.P. for both, 180 tp 200 any way to make it efficent enough and not beat the hell out of your 4450.Ya you can plant right behind them.
