If you started out with a relatively plain set of cows........what sires would you stack in the herd(AI sires) over say 3 generations.......in order to build a herd that specialized in selling show heifers? I would be interested in red and genetic defect free ones but all info appreciated.

AJ I think this could be an interesting discussion.  There are a few more variables tjat need to be defined to help understand constraints and goals.  1)effort/labor available for calving time 2) sires to be used on open market or unlimited budget to obtain hard to get semen 3)  national shows or local jackpots. I think Red reward or any of his sons would be a good place to start just depends on what the cows look like and what they need.  Structure is the hardest thing to change/get right muscle is the easiest to add.  Red knight or solution/ right direction and/or sons.  Kane captain, leveldale boardwalk, jsf marquis, saskvalley tradition, jsf goldenrod, hot commodity,  saskvalley imperative.  I think there are plenty of options for this out there.  Just need to know more to be real specific.

I know it's not true "spirit" of the question, but it would be more cost effective to use those cows as recips and implant them with legit embryos from good cows sired by the bulls mentioned by mbigelow.  Outside of that, for show heifers you need a good mix of Shorthorn/Maine/Irish/Chi via Trump (solution, red knight, etc) Red Reward, and KABA Rose descendents.  Unless you wanted to be different and set a trend using a different mix of Shorthorn/Maine/Irish/Chi crosses.

GM is right on-if you want to see how to stack them-just look at the Sullivan pedigrees, and I have some proven not quite so stacked embryos CHEEP-just get a heifer out et of the cow and use Hot Commodity-Sultan of Jazz, Red Demand, Private Malone Etc O0 O0

I would also say buy some proven embryos and work on those or sell the plain cows and buy what you are shooting for.

Solution solution solution

You could use a bull of his breeding on the cows you have now AJ and likely produce some reasonably competitive heifers in the first generation.  Certainly after the second.

Best bang for your buck would be to flush 2 or 3 of the best cows you can get a hold of to Red Knight and then do those to Hot Commodity or Red Reward and then do the reverse.

Those 3 bulls have reverse sorted and produced the highest number of good embryos for us in the last 3 years.

Thanks for the information. I've been doing the Shorthorn-Red Angus composite deal now 10 years. Was considering offering 15 bulls and 10 heifer calves in a joint production sale with a outfit. I just wondered what bloodlines would draw buyers to Kansas to buy a composite heifer registered with the Shorthorn association. An attractive stlylish heifer that would make a good county fair or state fair entry but not get away to far from where I am as far as moderation and balanced common sense as far as convenience traits.

I really like the Hot Commodity's. They come easy and really grow. The daughters are turning into good momma cows. The first picture is a H.C. 2 year old out of a 1st calf heifer. The 2nd picture is a full brother to the heifer and was the cow's 2nd calf.
They H.C.'s really do their share of winning at shows.

Only AI Certificates are available for purchase on Hot Commodity, no semen. Sometimes it shows up on fundraising auctions though.

We have had no issue getting Hot Commodity semen from the owners. Cornerstone Farms or Sullivan Farms.

Hot Commodity is making easily the best Shorthorn cattle we have ever raised. I thought he needed to be used on a Trump stacked pedigree, but he doesn't. Just put him on a cow with a little hair and quality and he will enhance just about everything on her.
