What steer and heifer do you pick to win your state fair? I'm in Ohio and I think Cody shafer will win with his heat wave steer and heifer Hannah winegardner with the shorthorn plus

I live in Texas now.  But I'm originally from WI and know more breeders and exhibitors in WI.  So for WI State Fair Steers, how can you bet against Brock May?  Lauren will be right there, herself.  Heifers are much harder...Calli Bayer, Jessica Radcliffe, Aubrey Doherty...not sure what they've all got in their barns this year.

In Iowa its going to be any steer from Tracy and Wade. In the heifers there are a few Udells Elder and Spengler will be really tuff!

I'm from Indiana. Id say the Martin steer and Wilcox steer will be the  top 2 steers, but it seems the Streitmatter family is VERY confident that their simmi steer has it won already.

The heifer show will be very interesting... Im betting on chamberlins to win..... But not with that I 80 heifer!

The word from the MN State Fair in the market class is they feel this year may be the year for a breed steer to be in the hunt.  We have a very tough Foundation Simmi steer that we have been told has a good chance and he has already won a show.  The heifer show is usually good for the O'Sullivans.  Habegers may also have a steer or heifer in the hunt at our fair.

Are Callie and Jessica still showing as Jrs this year? My sister is the same age as them and I thought both said they were done last year even though they still had a year of eligibility left. There is a whole group of very competitive showman that are finishing up their Jr careers, so there could be a changing of the guards-so to speak!  If they are not there this year, it could leave things wide open in the heifer show and showmanship. As far as the steer show goes, it is still the May's show to loose!

You might be right about Jessica.  If she were eligible, I'd say Kelli Retallick.  Calli should be eligible, as she had a heifer at the Pioneer Showdown.  Her brother Ty has a nice heifer and has been winning and you might see Reba Keene up there as well.  And in the steer category, I forgot about Colton Sullivan.  I would think he, Brock and Lauren will be the top three.

Garrett Stalcup has a Heat Wave x Chrolais steer that's going to be a crowd favorite.  Get it?

And I was going to ask about Olivia Lapke.  She's won this year with a Charolais heifer, a Jesse James heifer and a Heat Wave heifer.  Did I get that right?

As far as steers go, I'm sure all 3 will be competitive, but for them to rank like that, one of them would have to show something other than a crossbred. I think you also have to consider some of the others like Lilisand-her char last year was flat good- just not black! It would be neat to see a breed steer win it all. I can't recall the last time I saw that at the WI state fair!

Boot Jack, check out the link below.  Brock has a silver Crossbred, Lauren an Maine and Colton a Low % AOB.  One day Brock won, the next Colton won.

I showed in the 80's and Bobby May fit steers for a number of different kids in Iowa County, some Grant County.  His calves would win Grand and Reserve in both Junior and Open Steer shows.  That could be 4 calves.

And in the early 80's I saw a nice brindle/white Chi steer qualify for State Fair.  The same steer won the Junior show except, he somehow darkened up and was coal black by the time he got to Milwaukee???

Cattle Cards, you've got me there. I've only been there for the last 10 years! I didn't even think they did an open steer show anymore, so I didn't take that into account as far as numbers. I still say it would be awesome if a breed steer won, maybe I just like to root for the underdog! We were the underdog in the heifer show last year and did pretty darn good, so it is possible.
