This evening I went to the barn to feed and noticed our steer was bloating. This is the first time he's ever done this. What can I do to stop the bloat? I didn't feed him any grain this evening, just grass hay.

might want to try a bloat block.  Should be able to buy one from your feed store.  We put them out when we are forced to graze alfalfa stubble before it freezes down and have had really good luck with them.

We use therabloat. it comes in a small bottle and is mixed with water. You just put it in a drench bottle and tube and give it to them. A trick that an old timer told me about that works well is to get the animals front feet about a foot higher than the back feet. We do this by putting the front of our trimming stand  in the back of our horse trailer and tie your calf in it. This normally works to change the position of the stomachs and releases some of the gases.
