I have a steer this year who has been chewing on his halter, so much so, that he has almost chewed right through it.  He is getting all of his vitamins and mineral, so I can't see that being the problem, I am guessing it's just a bad habit.  Anyone have any ideas for me, that could help him stop? Something that I could put on the halter?

1 inch pieces of PVC, the smallest that will fit over the halter. Just enough pieces so that you can tie it but there wont be any rope for a foot or so. I think we used a cheap Carabiner threw the rope to keep them on.

We had a steer go through a halter a week.  He just loved chewing on it.  Tryed a neck tie, but he chewed it too.  He would also chew on a neighbor's halter if he could get to it.  The PVC sounds like a good idea.  Good luck...ours did chew right through the nylon rope and be loose.  :)

our cow chews them all the time we go threw at least one halter and neck rope each fair, plus everytime she is ties for a period of time, my son is showing her calf this year and he chews on his also.  I thought about spraying it with the no chew stuff for horses or dogs has anyone tried that.

We have used old water hose to cover the rope as well, cut a strip long enough to cover the rope from halter to knot, you can slide it down when you tie them high.

We had a group of calves that did this also. I tried every thing including dish soap, and gasoline. They still chewed them. Sounds like the PVC would work. We eventually found an old chain lead that we rigged up that worked pretty well.

our steer chews through electric cords that are plugged in.  pulls them out of outlets if he can reach them.  I think it is due to boredom.  chewed through heat tape this winter going to the waterer.  has even blown a breaker while chewing and has never stoppped him, even wrappend one with pvc and he fiddled with it until he got it loose, even chewed through a cord that had a spring wrap around it.
