I have a steer that is halter broke and gentle. He walks good with a rope halter but whenever it is time to show he hates the leather show halter? He starts jumping and picking up his front legs and becomes very angry as soon as you start to get near him with the show halter. I am not sure if it is the sound the chain makes or if it hurts him when I pull on it? I have wrapped the chain in vet wrap to stop the noise but he still goes insane? I have had to show him with the rope halter at a couple of prospects but as Texas majors are soon approaching I know that I am unable to used the rope halter and I am going to have to use the leather show halter. Has anybody had this problem? or does anyone have any tips on what to do to make him used to the leather show halter?

Just use a leather strap that matches the halter, and put a snap on the end of the strap so you can switch out your leads quickly between the chain and chainless.  That way you can eliminate the chain but it will still look like your show halter.

Wrap the chain with vet wrap, that has worked for us.

I take the chain off and use a black rope on my show halters. I do this with all of them because I am brutal for not trying the leather at home first. lol

I always use a chain chin strap on horses and kids and wife.  they seem to respect commands more.  not.

You could try plugging his ears with paper towels so it mutes the sounds of the halter
