I need anyones help!!
Haven't called a vet yet, but one of my best steers has hurt its back right hind leg.

Its not swollen, but looks sorta twisted outward and he is definitely limping on it.  ANY ideas what he did to it??  Think it will get better?  Hip kinda looks lower but not really for sure.

Have any of you had this happen?  we can't for the life of us figure out what he did to it.  Unless got hung in something or one of the other steers hit his hip  or something>
We do have several in a pen together.  They don't ride each other much but have seen them do it.

ANY HELP would be soooo appreciated.  Of course he was one of our best ones!!

Best place to start-- dexamethasone to relieve the inflamation,  banamine to kill the pain and lots of running water all over the leg to hopefuylly reduce swelling & further damage.  20- 30 min water hour off & back w/30 min again.  if injury is in stifle  probably either riding steer & got knocked sideways,  joint probably some way close to the same problem,  Tinature of time heals most all

I agree with Cowman 52. Dex should help. A lot of vets will not give you both Dex and Ban together. But some will. Keep the steer somewhat confined and on a soft surface.

thx so much--how often and how many cc per dose?  My vet said give just the ban,  what does the other stuff do --it's been 3 days have I waited too long?  Plus how long do you think it will take to heal?  He's not only one of our better calves he's my sweetest !  THANKS!!!!!

it helps keep swelling down, and will take some swelling out.

Dex works on the inflamation and Ban is a pain reliever. Little surprised he didn't give you Dex first..... But, I'm not a Vet

Kobo, Have you thought about getting him adjusted by a good animal chiropractor? I am too far away but can hook you up with a good one if you need.

If the leg isn't swollen or there isn't any hide knocked off somewhere, you might just have footrot.  They'll limp something terrible sometimes with it.  Cattle are real susceptible to it right now with the drought we've been in.  I know your area has had some rain, but they can still get it easy.  I'd give him a dose of Micotil or some other antibiotic recommended by your vet just in case.  It won't hurt anything.

His foot and leg kind of  turns outward he also kinda tippy toes on it his hip looks lower but it might be cause he's not stepping down all the way--how can you know for sure on the footrot ??  would it like show up overnite?
What does these animal chiros charge? Think it work?

The reason they wouldn't prescribe Dex and Banamine is one is a  NSAID"S or Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories and Dexamethasone is a glucocorticoid class of steroid hormones.Dex is like those of you who have asthma and take prednisome. Dex will can also mask the signs of infection.
Both work to reduce inflammation but in different ways.

Banamine does a great job as a pain reliever. (analgesic and antipyretic-high temp reducer)

Foot rot, look for white covering in between or on the bottom of the  foot. Have you had your vet come and check him out?

I did call said just give the ban?  Guess will try him again in the am going to check his foot first.  One more question-- do I give the ban every day?  He wasn't any better today--just sick about this--

Banamine is like you taking aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. Only the injectible on cattle is usually every 12 hours. I am not a vet and I would suggest that you have him take a look at the calf if there is not improvement with the banamine.

another thing that would make them limp really bad. He could have a small abraison on the pad or something stuck in it. Take him to the vet and they can clean it up and use some hoof tongs to see if it's in the foot.

foot rot stinks,  run a finger between the toes & smell,  foot rot is like screwworms from a long time ago--a smell you NEVER forget,

dex in effect 5 hrs after inj lasts about 6 hrs,  ban 1/2 strength in 3-5 hrs,  lasts about 48,  give 1 cc per 100 lbs if need to stay on it 1/2 that much 1 1/2 days later.
