Unfortunately, this is happening more and more. Last year we showed at the Arkansas hillbilly jackpot show, and the guy across from us got his blower stolen. There were also some fans stolen, most of the thefts occurred Saturday night. On Sunday they kept making announcements about how horrible this was, to have some 4-h'ers things stolen and the items needed to be returned. They never did get the stuff back.
At Missouri Jr. Cattlemen show there were some fans stolen, we were not there but heard about it.
Very sad situation, very sad.

you know its bad when you have to lock everything away...really sucks I put everything away, or pad-lock it. Even then this year I had both my pitchfork and a shovel take a walk...

It is very sad that people resort to stealing from youth that work very hard to get what they have.  I helped organize Charolais Junior Nationals this past summer.  On the last night of the show while all the kids were at their awards ceromony, SOMEONE went through the barn and cleaned the place out.  Frrom water pails, to extension cords, fitting mats, and evan resorted to stealing some of the decorations used through the week.  By the time it was all said and done, it totaled over $2500.  The worst part is We know who did it,,,can't proove they have the remaining items, they did however return  a portion of the extenion cords, that were sercured to the panels, that belonged to the facility used for the show.  These people know who they are, and don't know how they can still go to shows, and feel good about themselves.

Doesn't seem right.  We've been to a show where people were taking clippers as soon as you left your stall for the ring.  It is really sad for the kid who saved to buy the clippers not to mention very difficult to keep that close of an eye on all your stuff.

Maybe a naive question, but do you think the people who steal these things actually use them or do they try and sell them?  We've been fortunate enough to not really ever had anything stolen, but I'm sure our luck will run out one of these days.  If people only knew what this did to the kids who purchased these items with their winnings instead of going out and buying xBox's, iPods, etc.  These are items that they do their work with almost every day.  Sorry to all who've had things stolen

As much as feeder and killer cows are worth right now my biggest concern for this years show season is cattle being stolen.  I hope that the show administrations are taking this into consideration and preparing for added security.

The robberies and home invasions in our part of the country have really gotten to be common place in the past six months.

That is all very sad.  Things walk off from our fair.  If things keep disappearing from BEST shows (because I live in Ohio)  I will be sleeping in our barn come fair time to make sure my animals and things stay in place.  Our showbox is heavy but apparently it needs to be chained down!!  Some of these kids work so hard to get this stuff it is horrible that it is being stolen.  I also wonder if it's always even show people.  Ohio State Fairgrounds is not in a remote area by any means!!  :-\

I had all 3 of my HOT PINK water buckets get stolen at fair last summer. I come to fairgrounds the next morning...which was my show day and my steers went without water from 9pm till 7am....thankfully people at our fair are friendly and loaned me 2 buckets..until my mother could bring more down from the farm. I HATE the nights of tractor and truck pulls......it brings the"intresting" people out that will just mess with ur crap for the fun of it. Also my lock and screws on the hinges of my show box was messed with...but thankfully smart me stripped the screws so no one could get in it.

Lol we have a blast at our fair and use our cell phones to take pics of people we find strange...lol this woman that was in her late 40's early 50's was no kidding wearing skinny jeans with slits all down the legs starting right at the butt and lil below the crotch..a shirt that came a lil below her chest that said smokin!, high heeled cowboy boots, and one of those fake straw cowboy hats....and to top it off her strings from her thong were peaking over her jean top...lol she gave the meaning" I like my women a lil on the trashy side...but I thinking she was pushing "way over" the trashy side!!  Another of my favorite intresting fair people..are these "fake" cowgirls that wear boots with no scuffs what so ever, tank top, tight pacific sun skinny jeans, and once agian those ugly fake cowboy type hats..yall know the ones"!!!

Im very lazy now, but I used to try and me the first person to the barn every morning. You would not believe the freaky people who prawl around the barns early in the morning. If you have somthing you value you better lock it up. I have also caught dozens of other peoples cattle that were running loose on the Midway. Here are just a few of the memorible things I have seen at shows early in the morning.Drunk steer jocks passed out in the asile. Loose bull trying to breed  hiefers that were on the tie- out. A big-o-Duroc and a York gilt getting da freak on next to the funnel cake trailer, 2 big-o-carnies getting da freak on in the cow barn. And the memory I get out of my head was when I took calf to the wash-rack and saw a carnie bowed and taking a big-o- dump on the wash rack.

Wow, that sounds nasty...we have a fair kinda like that a couple years ago, I was 17 at the time. this carny came in the barn and started dragging one of our group away, the girl was two years older than me. Just glad one of tge other girls, tough as nails woke up. His excuse, he needed to get a tent threw...yea Ok. He spent the rest of the night stocking the outside of the barn...and he took of with a custom horse jacket if mine....carnys, so gross. Same show, two years later I walk ib the bathroom and find this rather big girl and this guy in the handicap bathroom, whats worse, another showman found her nude on the bathroom ground the night befor out cold....yeash

One deterrent to thieves is to make your stuff very unique visually - orange / lime green / florescent paints look ugly but your stuff is very identifiable.  Also, weld initials on equipment if you can.  Most thieves will not bother with it, especially when during daylight.  At night, lock it up.

As for calves, when these start disappearing we may see locked gates and electric fence wire inside show barns.
