Normal practice for us.  We do creep feed ahead of time so they start at the bunk better.  I like to give pre-weaning shots 2 weeks ahead of time if I can work it in.  Early weaning works well for us, cows stay in condition and the pastures last longer.

Well, bud, it looks like we are gunna have to wean early august this year and I have a few ideas.
Where I can, I'm gunna fence-line wean, which I have found is much less stress on the calf.  We are going to be dealing with some real young, light-weight, drought stressed calves to begin with so I want to pamper them as much as possible.  I am going to precondition the end of July with Pulmoguard PHM-1 for pasteurella and TSV-2 intranasalfor immediate viral protection.  After weaning I will re-up with Vision 7 w/somnus and bovi-shield gold 5.  Im planning on grinding a mixture of hays to include about 50% CRP hay, 25% 1st cuttin alfalfa and 25% hailed wheat hay.  I will load the chuckwagon with ground hay and top it off with wet gluten to supply about 5 pounds gluten/head as fed.  I will see how they do on this ration, I may have to put out some hi energy lick barrels or a liquid supplement of some sort.

aandtcattle the only thing I would add would be Loomix Ore-bac CPR to get them started.  I've gotten amazing results and I know many others who have as well.

Is the loomix product a liquid? I always tried to put out Brigade-Crystalix tubs for calves being weaned.

So What is the age range for the calves that you are weaning in August? Just Curious...
