I put a 1/4cc straw of sexed semen in the thaw jug and it jumped right out!

I stuck it back in, had to hold it down, went through the process and discovered that it was completely empty, which is what I was thinking when I sat for a minute or so holding it down.

Anyone have that happen before?

I do not think that I will mention the bull or semen seller, but just curious if this happens very often as it is a first for me!!

Thanks!

Mark

Had it happen to a egg once. Embryologist told me that it wasn't packaged correctly.

Straw was not faulty. Shake the excess nitrogen out of the bottom of straw or it will rocket out of the thaw unit. Liquid nitrogen does not mix with water well.

I did shake it,

If the straw was not faulty, why was it empty?

I put it into the gun, and press the plunger to make sure it seats correctly and starts.  There was not a drop of semen in it, none came out.

It was possessed - good thing it emptied out our you would have had to exorcise the calf - you lucked out ;)

I had this happen once--  dropped straw of semen into thaw water and it shot back out like a rocket and bounced off the ceiling , then bounced off of 1 or 2 walls before hitting the floor.  There was no cotton plugs left in it when I picked it up-  but probably was some semen, but with no cotton plugs, there was no way to eject it.

I figured that there was probably a crack in the straw that let nitrogen into the straw and when it was warmed up, the liquid nitrogen expanded into a gas -- blowing out the cotton pusher plugs and made a rocket.  was kind of cool until ya figure that I paid good money for it.

That semen came from ABS, called them and mailed the straw back to them and got a refund on that straw.  ABS didn't sound like it was the first time that they had ever heard of this.

Dr. Elsden told stories about freezing embryos in the old ampules and if not sealed perfectly--  they would get nitrogen inside and blow up when put into thaw water.

Have a good one

I had 1 explode when I put it in the thaw jug a couple of years ago, the guy that I was working with told me that it would happen occasionally. In this instance it popped the side out, don't know if it had a problem prior to putting it in the jug or not but I was told to contact thee semen distributor and they would replace it.
