Stupid question...
« on: September 23, 2010, 05:29:04 PM »
I have thought and thought about this...not wanting to actually ask this question! haha. What is the meaning of the numbers behind a registered animal's name? WHR Sonny 8114, Jakes Proud Jazz 266L... I know that it is the individual breeders who name them, what are the reasons that some of you have for putting a certain number behind the name?

For us and most breeders it's a tattoo/tag/brand number to differentiate between members of cow families.  Example: Miss Thundering Wind 7806, 829, and 841; all of which I own.

Many people use the letter for the corresponding year of the animal's birth(2010 is X)  and the number designates the birth order of the calf.    For example   a calf with the tag or tattoo 3X would be the third calf born in the herd in 2010.   4X would be the fourth, 5X the fifth, etc.  That's how we do ours.

Most of the letters are for the year such as the previous member posted, different breeds use different letters for that year. The numbers we personally use as a birthdate, so a march 3rd calf of this year would read "Emmy 303X" for us.

So what happens if you have two in the same day? Different first name?
