Hello, Happy 4th! New poster here. We have a polled Hereford steer, bought in October 2010, when he was about 7 months old. We don't have access to a scale, so using a weight tape I got a 1050 lbs reading last week. We have about 70 days till the Fair and I'm making adjustments to the feed.
Currently he is getting a total of 8 lbs of HSC Finishing Touch + 4 lbs steamed rolled oats w/molasses + 4 lbs 16% super stock + 2 lbs ADM Show Stopper Show Calf Concentrate divided into 3 feedings.
He needs more muscle in the rear and on top. I was thinking about adding a fat supplement, such as MaxEGlo or even a liquid oil.
I'm trying to decide between ShowTec Natural Fit and High Octane Champion Drive as an alternative to Show Stopper Concentrate, or should I stick with it?
Any recommendations or further suggestions? Also, what should be a realistic goal for weight in 70 days?
Thank you!

As far as the supplements they all have their + / - but based off of your weight you are not feeding enough grain, you are feeding less that 2% of his body weight at this time, the steer should be eating at least 25 pounds a day. If you could average 3 pounds a day from here on out he should be around 1260.
Try upping his grain intake slowly over the next 2 weeks adding about a half a pound of feed every couple days to each feeding, once you have him eating a full ration introduce your fat supplement. Most calves convert around 7 to 1, some better some worse and as they start to fatten up they convert less.
I like to use stabilized rice bran to add fat, about 2 pounds a day.

Thank you for the welcome and advise. I understand that I'm feeding an amount that is on the low side, it's expensive! One thing that I gathered from reading here is that I need to cut down on fiber in his diet in order to open up room for more nutrient rich food. I used to add some beet pulp to the mix, but I've cut it out now. Also I plan to cut out the oats and double the 16% super stock - it's only 8% fiber. I will also slowly increase the amount of total feed, as advised. Thanks again!
I'll take pictures soon. My other concern is hair. Our last steer was a Charolais cross and his hair was pitiful! This hereford has the potential for good hair, I saw it in winter, but he doesn't have it now. I know we need to brush him more. Any other fixes?

He definitely needs more feed.  Yes, it's expensive, but if you don't feed him, he won't gain- it's very simple.  Add some Rice Bran for finish also.

Work the hair in the morning, rinse, comb, blow and brush until your arms hurt, then do it again in the evening. Work the body hair forward and leg hair up. Make sure you blow then out completely to help get the hair to pop.

Even poor hair looks better when worked, it can make the difference when it comes down to the end.

Get his feed up to where it should be and try some grain hay, it will fill him up and help add weight, cost allot less than most of the fillers.

It's more expensive to not feed one properly.  You have zero chance to be competetive if you don't.

True, I see what you're saying. More feed!
I know that the weight tape isn't very accurate way to measure, but for what it's worth last Thursday it was 72" and today it was 73 1/2". It's not very realistic to believe that he gained 50 lbs in 7 days but at least I know he's gaining!

If you weighed him with an empty belly the first time and a full belly the next time he could gain 50 pounds on the same day. (that is with a tape or a scale)
We try and weigh at the same time of the day, everytime, this way they should have the same amount of groceries and water each time. It is real hard to gauge their weight if they are full one time, empty the next and back and forth.
