My wife Chris, just completed the Sun Country Bull Sale catalog tonight, and she has posted it on our website www.horseshoecreekfarms.com. It will be also put on www.ulurushorthorns.com and www.mcbethshorthorns.com in the next couple of days. Now that the catalog is completed we will spend some time videotaping several of the bulls, and we will put them on photobucket where anyone can view them.
If anyone would like a catalog or more information, just PM me. Thanks    Grant

You never know where a potential buyer will come from. Last night I posted this link to our bull sale catalog. This afternoon, I had a fellow stop in to inquire about a sale catalog. He was working on an oil drilling rig a few miles from here and saw the sale catalog on Steerplanet while he was working on the oil rig. He is a tool push so he has an office at the drilling site. He said he is possibly interested in a roan bull to try to raise some blue steers for his son to show.

Earlier this morning, I received an email from Australia, asking me to let them know when the videotapes of some of the bulls were done. Steerplanet has a wide audience and it always amazes me where inquiries come from. The power of a site like SP is quite amazing!

HC Mist's Return 13R is a full Irish bull we raised and used here for the last 4 years. He is an ET son of Highfield Irish Mist and Waymar J&J Strawberry 96. Highfield Irish Mist was our first Irish import, and we brought him from Ireland in 1974. I refer to him as a once in a lifetime bull, as he consistently settled over 100 cows per year, in three herds with one of them being 1000 miles from here. He died of a twisted gut on the operating table at the U of S vet college when he was 14 years old. He never needed his feet trimmed and his daughters were excellent producing females. If you look back in many of the Canadian Shorthorn pedigrees today, you will probably find Irish Mist one or more times in their background. For example, Saskvalley Pioneer 126P, our 06 Canadian National Champion bull, had Irish Mist in his background 8 times.

The dam of Mist's Return is Waymar J&J Strawberry 96, who is still producing here at age 14. She will be flushed again this spring. I have posted a picture of her here, and you may recognize her, as she has been pictured on here before. She has been a great producing female for us and has also been an excellent egg producer. She produced over 100 grade 1 embryos in 6 flushes and I have none left. Her embryos have sold to many breeders in the US, Canada, Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales.

Mist's Return is the easiest calving bull we have ever used... ever. He has been used on our heifers for 4 years, and his fourth calf crop is now arriving. So far, we have only assisted one calf at birth from him, which was a backwards calf, in those 4 years. Probably the main reason he calves so easily is that he has the shortest gestation length of any Shorthorn bull we have ever used. His calves are very vigorous at birth and are up and going in minutes after being born. They are moderate framed and do not win many growth contests, however, they are functional and very sound structurally. They also have amazing hair... like muskox. It is so thick you can hardly pull a comb through it.

I sold Mist's Return last August after using him for 4 years. I am wondering if I should have done this, but I decided to sell him, when I was offered a very good price for him after we had finished using him. I have semen here that is eligible for sale in Canada, but I haven't got any exportable semen. Since I have sold him, I have had interest from the US, Ireland and Australia on him. He was a white horned bull, so I never thought we would ever sell enough semen to pay the extra costs of collecting exportable semen. Here is a picture of Mist's Return as a two year old, and a picture of his dam at almost 12 years of age.

I have only got two daughters in the herd by Mist's Return as all of the other heifers sired by him have been sold as breeding stock. The third picture is a Mist's Return heifer out of a Salute two year old ( a full sister to our Timeline bull). This heifer sold to Minnesota last fall.

Mists return is a great looking bull-and took a really good snow pic when he was young-is exportable semen that big a deal? It would stand to reason that there would be a demand for these genetics ,Irish Mist was mostly unavailable here. and other than some of the Gus bloodlines-this is the most predictable (as far as availability) calving ease Canadian genetics I know of that would show. My friend and I bought a bull from this sale last year lot 38. A JT Burwash son out of Poplar Park. I hate to say it but I shipped that bull 5 months after he got here. Every cow or heifer bred to him was either luted or shipped too. I had a Rob Sneed bull here before the Burwash bull last year, both yearlings with cows on nothing but grass and mineral. The Sneed bull gained weight and got fat while the Burwash lost weight and kept growing taller. Also the disposition of the Burwash bull really went south as he grew. Honestly was the worst bull buying decision I have made in my short 11 year career. Not trying to slam anybody just wanted to share. Remeber this is not a Horseshoe Creek bred bull and I'm not knocking your program. Never seen your cows only heard what others have seen. I also recall the Horseshoe creek bulls last year dominated the sale.

I am sorry to hear about this. I have sent you a PM about this, and I would appreciate you getting back to me.

I dont think it was the worst buying decision you've made in 11 years. I think without naming names you can probably guess of a couple of others? I do think we were  looking for more moderate SH and this particular bull didnt work out for either of us. I am expecting a few calves and there is a good chance that they will work out fine??
Getting back to Sun Country Sale : A couple of things we have to get excited about is the fact that there is NOT another opportunity to purchase a group of Shorthorn bulls that are performance tested ANYWHERE in the US. It's one very large group and this is exactly what makes the trip worth it- one buyer can see a variety of bulls in one place. I would suggest testing for BVD and a complete list of Vaccination history for all of the Shorthorn  programs involved in the sale.  I have sold all of my 09' bulls and have recommended this sale to several still looking for bulls.

Sorry for running my mouth before I think. Sue you r right. prolly not my worst decision. I have already been offered a replacement or my money backn since I shot my mouth off from them. My whole point was not to knock anyone just to share my expierence. i'm sure there were alot of good bulls to come out of the sale. That particular bull I used happen to not work for me. Sorry if I upset anyone.

Hey JIT and ULURU,

Very Nice set of bulls again this year.  Sometimes its hard to tell from pictures, but I'd have to say that I'd really like to see lots 8, 15, 31, & 35 as well as Bob's Ruffian bulls in person.  Unfortunately my schedule won't allow me to attend.

Nice offering!!  Good luck with your sale!!!

Thanks Lynn
We are very happy with the Ruffian calves
The dams in all cases are real good cows and that has helped.
A Buster 14K daughter, a Raggedy Ann cow and a Gold Mine 2109 daughter
A whole lot of Gold Spear in Lot 10 has produced a great result.

We  would love to see you in Sask.

Yes. Sneeds sell  private treaty... bulls are moving quickly....helps having actual harvest data and generations of low birth  weights etc. SULL took a large group of females out of there and those will be ET program for sure.
