I believe the Irish cows you are referring to Dan, were the very last importation of Irish Shorthorns out of Ireland to come to Canada.  I think the name of the man who imported them was Ken McKnight, and  I believe he owned an auction market in east central Alberta  ( Possibly Drumheller or some place north of there... possibly at Hanna, AB) I remember hearing at that time, from a breeder in Ireland, that these cattle had come to Canada. If I remember correctly, there was 3 or 4 females and at least 1 bull. The bull was a white bull named Castletroy White Way. I tried to find out more about them at that time, but no one seemed to know much about this guy or the cows. I don't think he had any association with owning any Shorthorns prior to bringing these cattle in. It was a few years later that I heard that Milton Hennig had got all these cows and the bull ( or at least what remained) The Highfield Betty cow was supposed to be a good one. I never saw her, but Milton told me she really did a job for him. I have attached a picture of one of he rgrand daughters, who was an amazing cow . She was Winalot ST Beth 4G. Sorry for the picture quality but it is the only picture of her I have been able to find. I think I have some semen from Castletroy White Way somewhere in one of my tanks. Been a while since I saw it, but I am sure it is there somewhere.

As a note of interest, I was going through one of my semen tanks a couple days ago and I found 2 straws of Deerpark Dividend that I forgot I even had. It was collected before the Irish cattle had any registration status in the US and Canada, as all it says on the straw is Roan Shorthorn bull  and KABSU.

I got the Winalot Beth Juliette 9K cow from Rolly Bateman when he dispersed his herd. We had several good flushes from her, and I think she will cross extremely well with Mr Gus 80C . I implanted 4 embryos from this flush and have 4 calves coming, so I decided I would share one. Catherine Williamson, Alvie Estates in Scotland is supposed to have two really neat heifer calves sired by Saskvalley Primo out of Beth Juliette 9K

I think 80C was ahead of his time. I remember getting a phone call from a leading Maine breeder, and he asked me if I had been to Alta Genetics ( Western Breeders in that day) lately. I told him I had to go out and pick up a bull there in a few weeks. He said, Make sure you go and see the Shorthorn bull that Western has purchased the rights in. He said that this bull was the best bull of any breed in the stud, and I think they had over 200 bulls of all breeds there at that time. It was 80C that he was referring too. When I saw him, I was also impressed with the bull, but I wondered if he had enough frame for that era to become popular. He was moderate framed but put together in excellent proportion. Now I wish I had been smart enough to purchase a few hundred straws. It would have been a very good investment!

There are some very good outcross bloodlines in this sale for anyone looking for functional, easy keeping females. The catalogue is online but if you didn't get one it's a collectors item, and you should order one. My guess is it will be one of those reference materials of the future!

Those embryos by Pheasant Creek Leader 4th out of Six S Leah are interesting. Leah is sired by Eionmor Higlander 70G the sire of Six S Panther 35P. 70G was a great producing sire for Six S by Eionmor Mr. Gus 80C. Further back Leah has a cross of JT Titan and Spruce Hill JoJo the maternal brother to Sruce Hill Image. Leah traces to the Nupar Cherry cow on her maternal side. The Pheasnt Creek bulls by Kinnaber Leader 6th were impressive.

IMO, if Leader 4th was alive today, he would be more popular that JPJ. I have always felt he was the best of the entire Leader line, Leader 21 included, and he is solid red and homozygous polled. As I say in the footnote, Leader 4th's dam is in my list of Top 10 cows I have seen in my life, and she was born in the 60s.I will always remember leader 4th running on pasture at Remitall. He was impressive! I had the last two straws of Leader 4th left in existence and I thought for a long time before I decided to use it on a flush of Leah. Last year I flushed Presto and red Sue to Leader 4th and the resulting calves are pretty impressive.I am showing two of them, but could have shown all of them.  I think Leah will work every bit as good or even better. Leah is an amazing cow. Yes, she is a big cow, but I haven't seen a thicker, deeper, softer made, easier fleshing cow in years. When I was young, I used to see a few cows like her in herds through western Canada. There aren't many left. She is also producing beyond my expectations. We have her natural heifer calf and a couple ET bull calves by Pioneer and they are all in our show herd this fall. Her heifer calf is in our sale next week, and I think she is a good one. At least 100 times better than her picture indicates. The constant rain we had for weeks on end did us no favors when we were trying to picture the cattle. We had to cancel the photographer 3 times, and ended up trying to snap some pictures myself ... some in the rain, and some when it had stopped for a few hours. Taking pictures by yourself is no fun !!! Chris had broken her ankle so I was left to try this by myself.
I am not going to sell any more of these embryos as I am going to get a little greedy and put the other 12 in myself. I can't wait to see the calves. Hopefully we will have as good luck as we had on the ones we implanted last year. 9 embryos implanted and 7 calves.... and they are all pretty right for the times.

Good point. What I was saying was that if someone was looking for new bloodlines with these qualities they would find them at this sale.I wasn't referring to anyones in particluars current bloodlines. If you have a program where you are focusing on function and the ability to convert grass to beef here would be a place to add genetics to further your goal. If you have aprogram that needs to add some of the genetics to do that it would be a slam dunk to look at some of these bloodlines. <beer>

I was not there, but heard that they were all very satisfied with how it went.  I bought the Venture heifer out of Major Leroy's mother.

What did the embryo lots bring?
Don't have the prices with me but $325 to I think $500 each maybe a bit more and they went to Scotland , USA and Canada. I for one obviously had the snooze switch on as there were some outstanding opportunities there!

Sounds like it was a good sale!

I am very excited because I was able to purchase the Pheasant Creek Leader 4th Embryo package!

Thank you to Horseshoe Creek!

I will definitely be using those embryos next spring and get those babies on the ground in 2012!  I invite everyone to visit!
Just wanted to share in my excitement with cattle folks-- my co-workers don't share my enthusiasm, but I still love them!
LOL ;)
