i tried the 7 day co synch and cidr  program. i have got about 60 % bred but the others are taking a couple heat cycles at least to breed natrual and the bull is good. these are normally breedd first time  kinda cows. I was wondering if anybody has had similar experiences

I use the same program and so far have been 7/9 on the first group and now 4/8 on the second with a few more to come in probably.  I have experienced the cows virtually always settling on the next cycle, maybe one a year doesn't come back and stick on the next cycle with the bull.  Were you trying to move cows up by synching them?  Sometimes people have the problem you are talking about when they don't give the cow enough time post partum before they go through this protocol.

no i wasnt trying to move them up. my dad usually does my aiing but he went and got a job that doesnt allow for him to do this and i didnt have time to go to ai school yet so i had a tech come breed them and i needed to do them in a short period of time. they had ample time after calving and were in good shape.this is the second time in 5 years we ve tried this with the same results. fertilitly isnt a problem either we usually get 80 % ai ed on a heat detection basis with one time breeding.

What are PPLs thoughts comparing the 5 day synch program to the 7 day co synch program and what have PPLs results been using the 5 day co synch? Thanks in advance.

Give them a shot of cysterellin at A.I It will make cattle ovulate and you will get more cattle bred first time. We use the 7 day synch program and had great results. It will get u more eggs on flushes and even works well on getting sows bred and with bigger litters.

CAB the 5 day program is for heifers and cows on pasture. Has something to do with their follicular waves or something.

I am most interested in the results obtained in mature cows using the 5 day co-synch protocol.I Went to a meeting this week and they were saying 20% better conception by using the 5 day program verses the 7 day co-synch protocol, but a couple of disadvantages of the 5 day protocol is that you actually double your heat detection time via 3 days on the front end plus your regular 3 days on the back end, & it requires one more trip through the chute for an extra shot of PG 8 hours after the first shot of PG when you pull the cidrs.

I went to a seminar last week by Dr. Mike Day of OSU about the 5 day CIDR protocol.  He had a ton of research showing that if you give the two PG injections at the same time (basically a double dose) and TAI, you can get 70% + settled in one day.  Double dose of Lutalyse on day 5, TAI like 66 hrs later with a dose of GNrH.  I like CIDR's, but I heat check, and TAI non-responders 72-75 hours later using the 7 day CIDR program.  I just may try this new 5 day plan.

we did some type of CIDR program and timed AI and got 10/15 the first time around. can't remember if it was 5 days or 7

Kiblercattle you'll need to ck into your 7-day co-synch protocol. The one that most PPL use is a total of 10 days long from day zero until TAI on day 10. Day 0 put in the cidrs with a shot of GnRH, day 7 pull cidrs & give a shot of your choice of PG, heat detect and breed all standing heats for 72 to 84 hours, then anything @ that time,(84 hours), AI and give a shot of GnRH. Some PPL would not wait until 84 hours post pulling the cidr and would be more along the lines of 72 hours.Ck your protocol and get back to us on exactly what you did. What would you think that your BCSs are, and do you have very many first calf heifers coming seconds in group herd?

Hmm what about pre-breeding vaccinations? Even if I run out of time I give Titiaum 5L5 or Bovi-shield gold 5L5 when I put Cidr's in.

what u listed above is exactly what i did to a t. I am not sure what you mean by bcs. No 1st calf heifers are coming into heat it appears that they all took.

I'm seriously considering using the 5 day plan. This was my first year to use TAI and I did the 7 day co-synch cidr. It's too soon to preg check but it's looking like 55% bred first AI. If I could get 70% I think I'd do cartwheels.

I'm lost and have no idea what could be going on with your cows as far as not settling to your bull. Did you have your bull given a full breeding exam?

BCS stands for body condition scores. Ideally you want your cows @ a 5 or 6 BCS when you are trying to get them rebred. Anything under a 4 BCS will be challedging to get to cycle. If you google beef cow body codition scores, you should get a chart with pictures to come up that will help give you an idea of your cow's BCSs.

What exactly is this program?

As far I know most if not all of the sire directories will have a number of different protocols listed in the back to synchronize heats in heifers and cows. There are a few different ones listed and certain ones work better for some depending on each persons facilities and time restraints. I happen to be looking @ the ABS Spring 2011 catalog now and they are listed on pages 104/105.
